Man, if Razor Ramon didn’t appreciate Goldust’s advances in 96, just wait until he meets Pat Patterson in the third round.

These televised house shows hold a special place in my heart as it was quite rare to see big name talent squaring off against one another on semi-free television.
ReplyDeleteBut, man did one usually have to suffer through a veritable cornucopia of crappy 20 minute jobber matches to get there!
Shelton beat some top flight names while IC champ. He got a great run.
ReplyDelete“MY GOD ALMIGHTY! MY GOD ALMIGHTY! THAT KILLED HIM!”
ReplyDeleteYeah and the PrimeTime Wrestling shows were usually filled with the worst of the worst. Here are the matches from this card to make that episode:
ReplyDeleteRomo vs. Bellomo
Koko vs. Sika
Santana vs. Reed
Outback Jack vs. Barry O.
Roberts vs. Bundy
Honky vs. Morales
The only problem is people overuse the KOTR 1998 commentary.
ReplyDeleteAgain: Steve Austin comes face-to-face with a better Intercontinental Champion and is assured victory.
ReplyDeleteRock's promo was tremendous. He absolutely wrecked the crowd.
ReplyDeleteAnd Kevin Kelly mentioned Austin and Taker hated the stipulation and were pretty unmotivated as a result. This was the period where Russo started to get off the rails.
ReplyDeleteWith a line-up like that, you would swear Vince was after the highly coveted ratings currently reserved for programs involving cats sleeping on chairs.
ReplyDeleteEven as a young mark who eagerly sought out any and all professional wrestling television programs, Prime Time, in most instances, could be a chore to sit through at times.
Thank God for the comedic banter between Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon.
Their banter was the selling point of the show. And always entertaining.
ReplyDeleteOh God, put them together as a tag team and they'd just be ludicrously insufferable. The crowds would be wanting their blood.
ReplyDeleteI posted the Sufferin' Succotash interview in the cringe subreddit. Go give it some love: http://www.reddit.com/r/cringe/comments/2s81dk/wwe_stars_incredibly_lame_insults_roman_reigns/
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I will go so far as to say the comedic antics of Bobby and Gorilla could easily rival or surpass popular sitcoms of today.
ReplyDeleteSoooo.... Bret Hart vs. Randy Savage final? Unless the spammers go crazy again?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, people? Ken fucking Shamrock?
I voted Ziggler
ReplyDeleteSavage got the milk before HHH owned the cow.
ReplyDeleteHow does Steve Austin keep advancing?
ReplyDeleteHuge star =/= Great IC champion
I thoroughly enjoyed Robo-Shamrock from his IC title run.
ReplyDeleteStill, it wasn't really much of a run.
Great IC champion =/= requirement for this poll
ReplyDeleteIt's not? Then what's the point?
ReplyDeleteThe point is the Mountie wins.
ReplyDeleteThere is no spoon.
ReplyDeleteYes and no. The match quality in his tenure was never great, but the TV was amazing and stay that way for a good while longer after this.
ReplyDeleteThe Godfather HoF question is a good one, though. Is anyone else in for having two decent gimmicks, but no superstar gimmick? The only other guy I can think of with multiple gimmicks in the Hall is Foley and that almost doesn't count.
ReplyDeleteThe point is vote for you who want to see advance.
ReplyDeleteThe Raw where he won it was one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI needed that good laugh today. Spectacular!
ReplyDeleteBut it just works for everything.
ReplyDeleteSantino
ReplyDeleteDolph
Savage
RVD
this bracket is biased towards Marty...
ReplyDeleteHow does Ziggler not break his neck overselling the stunner? Austin gave up the IC belt to go after bigger fish and that does a lot for his status (in terms of kayfabe). Everyone else who went on to the big belt (besides Warrior) lost the IC belt before moving on.
Savage simply outclasses HHH here. Even if you use 01 Two Man Power Trip HHH, he'd lose his cool over the Steph rumors and be dq'd for using a sledgehammer.
Shelton was a good IC champ but RVD was better
funny how patterson is still going against tough competition while poor Muraco, Morales and Patera are long gone.
ReplyDeleteAustin - Ziggler would be a damn fun match.
ReplyDeleteHe was a huge star when he had the IC title.
ReplyDeleteJust watched the main event of this show and that match had a lot of action and a lot of heat. People were into these feuds. I was impressed with how Harley Race held the match together. Yeah his run as the King was not like his NWA Championship reigns but he still proved he was able to go with the right opponents. Too bad he was stuck with the likes of the Junkyard Dog. A nice little gem of a match.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching the main event on the MSG Network at the time, but remember absolutely nothing else here.
ReplyDeleteRace was awesome and Piper did a ton of suplexes and other stuff that you never saw him do. Steamboat barely even did anything in that match and it was still awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am also reviewing the 3/7/87 Boston Garden show that had Hogan/Piper/Haynes vs. Orndorff/Adonis/Hercules in an elimination match.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about that. They did everything they could to avoid Steamboat and Savage from interacting with each other. The guys in the other feuds had quite a bit of interaction but Savage-Steamboat barely had any even though Savage played a major role in Steamboat's elimination. They really did an excellent job in making you anticipate their eventual confrontation.
ReplyDeleteThey were masterful about that stuff during this era.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that match but I get the feeling it won't be as good. While Orndorff is a suitable trade-off for Savage, Hercules is not even anywhere close to an aging Harley Race. Plus with Hogan in the match turns it into a Hulk Hogan match. Then again the first Survivor Series match with Hogan was better than it had any right to be so the match may surprise me.
ReplyDeleteNever sleep on Barry O !
ReplyDeleteThat six-man sounds like something I need to track down. Sounds awesome
ReplyDeleteI feel that Savage vs. Piper deserved its day on the big stage. Wrestlemania 6 comes to mind as a time it could have happened
ReplyDeleteNow you get tired of the match before it even happens because they have had so many physical confrontations and matches before the PPV match you are supposed to pay for even happens.

ReplyDeleteYou're a gentleman
