I was going to leave voting going until the morning, but some jackass managed to inflate the Bulldogs’ vote count by over 1000 extra votes, so I shut it down early and called the rest. The Hart Foundation was winning pretty handily up until that point, so we get the first ever DQ win in this tournament, sending the Harts onwards. Please keep in mind, this is just for fun, so don’t be a jackass about it.
So now we proudly present…the elite 8! And what the fuck are Terry Funk and Cactus Jack still doing here?
Shit Edge & Christian vs. Hart Foundation was tough.
ReplyDeleteSteiners, Harts, Bulldog & Owen and the Shield. I could pick Hawk and Animal but it's not NWA Hawk and Animal, it's the WWF neutured LOD.
ReplyDeleteHart foundation v Owen/bulldog would be for an interesting finals
ReplyDeleteVery interesting that there's only 1 tag team from the last 10 years
ReplyDeleteFuck it. I mean, Funk it. Jack and Funk all the way!
ReplyDeleteImagine a Sweet 16 that included La Resistance, Epico and Primo, McGillicutty and Whoever, Rico and Rikishi, Deuce and Domino, Hurricane and Rosey, Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty, Rico and Charlie Haas, and Kenzo and Dupree.
ReplyDeleteI voted for them over Owen/Yoko only because I was a total Foley mark up until his retirement, and love Funk. And I figure I had voted for Owen enough in his other matchups.
ReplyDeleteBad seeding.
ReplyDeleteI knew it.
ReplyDeleteOne guy. Hundreds of times.
I have a feeling a lot of the younger people on this blog are going to vote for the Hardys over the Steiners. They would be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI want a Steiners vs Shield final.
ReplyDeleteWait, people can vote multiple times? What kind of poll technology are we running here? Didn't know we were going things the Chicago Way (to quote Sean Connery).
ReplyDelete"Funk It' screams wrestling T-shirt to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd also, screw the elimination of Owen & Yokozuna. They are my favorite team left!
ReplyDeleteInteresting facts about the final 8:
ReplyDelete1) none of the final 8 are the wacky tag team partners who hate each other
2) 7 out of the 8 were long-term teams (funk/jack excluded).
3) 6 out of the 8 were either relatives (hardyz, steiners), in-laws (bret/owen, harts) or long-time friends before wrestling (road warriors, edge/christian).
Nothing sweet about that 16...
ReplyDeleteLook at their opposition so far:
ReplyDeleteBooker T and Test: Sucked.
Valentine and Beefcake: Before our time
Atlas and Johnson: WAY before our time
Owen and Yoko: They were an eh team, and they've been riding the "dead guys" sympathy vote up to this point
But I'm pretty sure Cactus Funk (and they need a much better name than that. "Middle Aged and Crazy"?) will be getting torn apart by the Hounds.
Real talk: Roman and Rollins kinda sucked as a team. They didn't really do anything until the Rhodes angle.
ReplyDeleteYou could almost have this elite 8 now. (Only 3 dead guys, and they're all in 1 match.)
ReplyDeleteReally should've put the Shield in under the freebird rule.
ReplyDeleteUS Title as well?
ReplyDeleteI thought Cactus and Charlie hated each other?
ReplyDeleteNo.
ReplyDeleteThat'd be an interesting tourney, though: US champs under the WWE banner. Eddie Guerrero would either win or make the final.
I think they feuded after WM, but Cactus and Funk were longtime friends.
ReplyDeleteSo Dean could defend Roman and Seth's title, but Roman and Seth could not defend Dean's? Makes perfect sense to me.
ReplyDeletecactus and funk are long-time friends but they will occasionally feud on screen. I think in the 24 hours they were champs, they were friends.
ReplyDeleteI'm down for a IC or US title tourny after this.
ReplyDeleteShit, that literally never dawned on me until I just read that.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd vote for Cesaro or Bryan in that tourny. They were having great matches week after week when they were champs.
ReplyDeleteSteiners (cause fuck the Hardys), E&C (beyond my fandom for both Edge, Christian and the team, I think they were immensely influential and basically wrote the template for every funny dickhead heel team since), Bulldog and Hart (cause I just don't get the Road Warriors and it was Bulldog's last decent work) and the Shield (cause they carried 2013 on their back).
ReplyDeletePatterson would disagree there.
ReplyDeleteHolding up E&C, the Harts, the Hardyz and Mick Foley as your example of "Hey, wrestling doesn't kill EVERYBODY" is...problematic.
ReplyDeleteGIMMIE THE FUCKIN MIC
ReplyDeleteWE GOT A 141 AND 2/3% CHANCE OF WINNIN' AGAINST FATT LARDY
I'M HUNGRY
By my count, there are 70 recognized IC champions, 56 different NWA/WCW US champs, and 27 WWE US champs. Get rid of the duplicates on the list, and there's 123 different guys.
ReplyDeleteWCW Steiners yes. WWF Steiners no.
ReplyDeleteI'm basing my votes on their WWF tag title reigns and Hardys WWF tag title reigns were that little bit better. I I based it on their careers then yeah, Steiners all the way.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but c'mon, Owen/Yoko > Funk/Foley. That's just science, man.
ReplyDeleteAnd 1 vote per IP address.
ReplyDeleteI went the full monty on Nakamura/Ibushi, but only ****1/4 on the main. I loved the end sequence in the main event, with the continuous dragonscrews used as a distraction essentially before the frog splash finished, but the IC match was just so brutally stiff, I was in awe the whole time.
ReplyDeleteI knew they wouldn't win, but losing to Funk and Foley's one day reign? This is why we shouldn't allow kids to vote.
ReplyDeleteIt was, but in the end I went with the Harts due to their longevity.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that we could have gotten that match too.
ReplyDeleteI think we had, only mixed. Bret/Bulldog vs Neidhart/Owen
ReplyDeleteThat's right, and it was awesome.
ReplyDelete.....the attitude era chewed up and spit out a lot of guys, didn't it.....
ReplyDeleteMan, the 'E WISHED they had a tag roster this stacked today
ReplyDeleteAt least they are alive.
ReplyDeleteI fall on the Cornette side of a fence for several reasons, but the primary one is because that his aesthetic does a lot more to minimize injuries than whatever Heyman was doing.
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteI hope that no other generation gets destroyed the way the 90s guys got destroyed.
"Valentine and Beefcake: Before our time"
ReplyDeleteSpeak for yourself, youngin. Valentine and Beefcake were my FIRST tag team champions.
Let's not forget that The Shield's tag title reign sucked donkeys.
ReplyDeleteAt least Jack and Charlie burned bright for one glorious night.
Ok, Pal. Now when Cena comes out,..call him...a Bastard. The very worst insult of them all. Ha Ha.
ReplyDeleteSnow snow in the Mid-Atlantic. DC area near Dulles airport. Roads are not good right now, but I made it to work. I expect my office to either work from home or to come in very late. Looking at the forcast, work from home is more likely.
ReplyDeleteI always thought people who come here hate new stuff. I guess this poll proves that wrong.
ReplyDeleteNot gonna lie, I kinda admire thayt guys dedication to get the bulldogs in. I just wish he could apply that to something in the least bit of importantance instead of a wrestling poll.
ReplyDeleteAnd they were wacky.
ReplyDeleteI like them well enough for the time being. Cool entrance, decent look (where's the roids when you need them?), fresh if cheesy.
ReplyDeleteIt pisses me off that WWE is treating them like total jokes before they even had a chance. This isn't the Colons getting a repackage, and even they got a month before the burials came.
WWE just does not want people to make money for them.
Did you watch ROH when Cornette was running it? He almost killed it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that safer is better, but Cornette's time has definitely passed. He hated El Generico (Sami Zayn).
TJ: Apparently dad got into Facebook, and someone sent him Rock singing some (modified) Clapton to Vickie Guerrero. And I have no memory of that.
ReplyDeleteMay have been Vicki Guerrero appreciation night.
ReplyDeleteI voted against the Dream Team simply because I considered Beefcake way out of his element in that match.
ReplyDeleteI definitely voted for Owen/Yoko, using the same logic I had in all their prior matches: None of those teams had an answer for Yoko.
What seeding?
ReplyDeleteNakamura was like mid-90s Ohtani in his dickishness during the middle of the match. It was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThe Quebecers can still interfere in OTHER people's matches, right?
ReplyDeleteFoley has injuries and stuff, sure, but his post-wrestling life seems pretty good with his charity work, comedy, etc.
ReplyDeleteNot while they were tagging
ReplyDeleteWhat's the issue with Funk & Cactus? Sounds like a fine tag team to me. Wouldn't make it until the end, but if this was a real card they would vary things up a little being hardcore brawlers.
ReplyDeleteOnly some of the 'E do. Vince doesn't give a shit.
ReplyDeleteNot gonna lie, but my avatar is sort of promoting who I want to win this thing.
ReplyDeleteVince made Mick wrestle Funk to make up for losing to Austin at Unforgiven and get another shot at Over The Edge, IIRC.
ReplyDeleteThat's a hell of a gimmick, Elmo!
ReplyDelete"Well Plaid", The Smoky Mountain Men.
Shit, nevermind, that was Jacob and Eli Blu.
Dusty, you nailed it brother. They need more events like Slamboree, where the Legends can gather in the ring to start the show.
ReplyDeleteIt's ironic that the Ascension peaked with their debut.
ReplyDeleteOther than the first Cena match this was the best thing about his return
ReplyDelete"You dress like a hooker. Not the the expensive kind."
Is Dragon Gate the second biggest promotion behind New Japan? I've tried and failed to get into it. The presentation is good, but I'm not a fan of the style.
ReplyDeleteGood heat in that All Japan match.
I remember the Dream Team through tons of old tapes I used to have, and Yoko and Owen aren't getting sympathy dead votes. Both have been dead for nearly 2 DECADES. Adonis and Murdoch deserved "they're dead" votes and for having a good reign.
ReplyDeletePls keep this up. The only hard part about Japanese wrestling is finding out what to watch when. Oh and the shittiness of dailymotion.
ReplyDeleteWhy would someone get heat for using a cool move? Did CM Punk get heat for stealing the GTS? Or Bryan for stealing the flying knee?
ReplyDeleteI think Ambrose and Reigns would both need to improve leaps and bounds before the fans would fully buy them on the level of Rock and Austin, even by association.
ReplyDeleteBig Show even clamored for it in that one radio interview that got a lot of buzz a few years ago. Said Dolph needed a legit finisher, and he was pushing the backstage folks to give him the superkick full time.
ReplyDeleteSo long as they dumb the idiotic "lu-cha" chant.
ReplyDeleteHell, I kinda marked out for him busting out the Rampage Jackson triangle slam on Rollins a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Reigns just hit Rollins (not the heaviest, but whatever) with the deadlift Rampage slam last week or the week before.
ReplyDeleteCan't walk and we still don't know how much damage his concussions have done.
ReplyDeleteDG is second, in my mind. The race is close though, certainly none come near NJPW-levels. Some may argue, based on numbers, that DDT is #2. Some may argue NOAH. Personally, despite small crowds, I find ZERO1 to be the most fun to follow. They have Dojo shows, and outdoor shows, and the like. Good stuff..

Keeping in mind that was the only Dragon Gate match I've ever seen, what don't you like about the style? I thought it was really exciting.
