May 3, 1987
From the Coliseum in New Haven, CT
Your hosts are George "The Animal" Steele (subbing for Bobby Heenan, who was selling the injuries he suffered after Ken Patera threw him across the ring last week) and Gorilla Monsoon
Tonight's featured match is the Can-Am Connection vs. Kamala & Sika. Also in action are the British Bulldogs, Ricky Steamboat, Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff & Butch Reed, and King Harley Race. Plus, the "Snake Pit" with guest Danny Davis.
Terry Gibbs vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
Gibbs knees Steamboat during a lockup and throws him over the top rope but Steamboat skins-the-cat and ends up taking Gibbs to the floor with a headscissors. Back inside, Steamboat works the arm until Gibbs hits an inverted atomic drop. Gorilla asks Steele about the WWF Magazine as he just says "uh..uh...." as Gibbs takes control of the match and gets a few nearfalls with a slam and a neckbreaker but Steamboat fights back and hits the flying chop for the win (4:13).
Thoughts: Steamboat sold a lot here. Gorilla and Steele on commentary wasnt as bad as you would think as Gorilla played it straight as Steele did his usual stuff and it went together.
Sivi Afi & Mario Mancini & "Leaping" Lanny Poffo vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff & "The Natural" Butch Reed w/ Slick
Poffo's post match promo is about Ken Patera and how "weasel hunting season" has now appeared. Before the match, Slick demands that everyone listen to him as he calls Hacksaw Jim Duggan a "yellow-bellied coward" and that Volkoff will sing the Russian National Anthem right now as Duggan answers the challenge and comes out. As Volkoff sings, Duggan cuts the microphone as the heels try to figure out why the mic does not work. Match starts with the heels attacking the faces from behind as they toss out Afi & Mancini. Sheik beats on Poffo until he tags Afi,who gets beat on by Volkoff. Afi uses his speed to avoid Reed and make the tag to Mancini as Gorilla asks Steele about his match against Savage. Reed beats on him and hits a gorilla press slam then tags who kills Mancini with a back suplex until he gets the win with the Camel's Clutch (3:00).
Thoughts: This was all about the Duggan vs. Evil Foreigners feud, which has been the most heavily pushed feud post WrestleMania III.
Gene Okerlund is with the Rougeau Brothers, who say that they are after Dino Bravo for costing them their match at WrestleMania III. Typical dull stuff from the Rougeaus.
Nelson Veilleux vs. King Harley Race
Race hits a high knee then he is shown in an insert promo talking about wanting to be the next World Champion then finishes off Veilleux with the cradle suplex (0:42).
Thoughts: They continue to make Race look dominant as a credible challenger for Hogan at house shows.
Okerlund is with Slick, who is wearing a Mercedes Benz medallion, prompting Okerlund to say he is missing the hood ornament on his car. Slick says that the first thing on his list is to take care of Tito Santana after what he did to him at WrestleMania III. Slick said he had his $2,300 tuxedo torn off of him as he calls Tito a "pepper-eating red..." as Okerlund tells him to keep it clean. Slick then says that Butch Reed will destroy Tito as that feud continues.
Rick Gantner & Rocky Stone vs. British Bulldogs
Davey takes care of both Gantner & Stone by himself as the Hart Foundation are shown in an insert promo taunting the Bulldogs with the Tag Team Titles. Dynamite and hits a clothesline then a snap suplex that barely saw him get Gantner over for the move. Man, he looked to be in tremendous pain here. Davey tags right back in as he launches Stone at Gantner before putting Gantner away with a running powerslam (2:48).
Thoughts: Sad to see Dynamite reduced to a pathetic shell of himself in the ring. Davey had to do like 90% of the work in their matches as a result.
The Snake Pit with guest Danny Davis. Roberts tells Davis, who struts on the set acting all cocky, that he is a wanted man as Davis tells us he is on his way to become one of the greatest wrestlers then asks Roberts who wants a piece of him as both Tito Santana and Koko B. Ware come out and threaten to kick his ass. Roberts then closes by telling Davis that he is like a man sitting in the electric chair. Good segment to make Davis look like the hunted.
Kamala & Sika w/ Mr. Fuji & Kimchee vs. Can-Am Connection
The Can-Ams get jumped from behind after the bell. Zenk gets double-teamed until he dodges a charging Kamala, who accidentally hits his own partner. Martel tags and dropkicks Kamala over the top rope then works the arm of Sika. Zenk tags back in but Sika headbutts him as he gets trapped in the wrong corner. Kamala then appears to hit Zenk in the nuts with a crescent kick that looked fucking painful. Zenk continues to get destroyed but is able to fight back and make the tag. Martel hammers away at Sika then the match breaks down. Martel collides with Sika then gets tossed to the floor by Kamala as its 2-1 against Zenk. Sika holds down Zenk so Kamala can splash him but Martel breaks that up with a trip then hits Sika with a flying body press in a completely ridiculous spot for the win as the crowd goes mental (4:20). Sika walked right into the corner as Martel climbed up then backed up a few feet to allow Martel to hit the splash, which looked idiotic. The heels attack the Can-Ams after the match and set up Zenk for a top rope splash but Martel grabs Fuji's cane and clears the ring.
Thoughts: Big win for the Can-Ams as the WWF continue to build them up for the Tag Team Titles. The only problem about that was Zenk leaving the WWF before they were able to get the belts.
"The Outlaw" Ron Bass vs. Rick Hunter
Bass beats on Hunter as he is shown in an insert promo telling us that he is baddest and meanest in the WWF. Gorilla then asks Steele about his featured match next week on Challenge against the Honky Tonk Man as Steele says its good then Bass gets the win with a double axe handle (0:59).
Thoughts: Very brief and the point of this was to put over Bass for his feud against Mulligan, who was already done with the company.
Okerlund is with Jimmy Hart and the Honky Tonk Man, who pretends that he has no idea who Elvis Presley is and why people keep comparing each other as Honky tells us what happens when you make fun of him as he points to his guitar. Okerlund then brings up his girlfriend Peggy Sue as Honky tells him shut up. They are building up Honky tremendously as a heel.
Next week we will have Demolition vs. Rougeau Brothers, George Steele vs. Honky Tonk Man, and also Randy Savage in action. Plus, the debate between Ken Patera and Bobby Heenan and more.
Final Thoughts: This show was okay. The Can-Ams win was huge, the "Snake Pit" was good and the Honky Tonk Man continues to improve as a heel. Other than that though, everything else felt like old hat and there has been too much of the Duggan feud on TV, IMO. Sure it was somewhat popular but to be on every show for weeks at a time was getting to be too much. The company is still struggling to get things going a month after WrestleMania III has ended.
Here is my schedule for the next several days:
Tuesday: WWF Superstars of Wrestling 5/9/17
Thursday: RF Video Face Off with Honky Tonk Man & Missy Hyatt
Friday: WWF Wrestling Challenge 5/10/87
Sunday: WWF Superstars of Wrestling 5/16/87

Paul has never lied so I believe him on the doc ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's her pompous "I know everything" attitude when she's pretty clueless about many things
ReplyDeleteHe was cursing what did he say? I never heard about that before
ReplyDeleteThe WWE would not exist today without ECW. The famed "Attitude era" was just the WWE's version of ECW.
ReplyDelete"The genesis of the phone,"
ReplyDeleteYou know, I've always wanted to see Paul do a comedy spot where he hits someone with a cellphone of today and they no sell it.
I've always gotten the opinion that Stephanie hated Paul E. but she needed him too much to get rid of him.
ReplyDeleteTNA fucked up by not bringing him in. The irony of the situation is that they are doing some of the things they told them to do and it's made the show better.
ReplyDeleteThe big question is whether Vince McMahon screamed at George Steele through the headset for only grunting and using one or two syllable words to call the action instead of telling stories.
ReplyDeleteIt's not actually my account. I just "borrow" it.
ReplyDeleteVince addressed it when he was in the ring with Eric Bischoff.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought that if WWE went belly up, HHH would somehow generate the capital to keep NXT alfoat.
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible comedy
ReplyDeleteThe Attitude Era is full of Vince Russo swerves and Vince Russo bullshit that never existed anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't meant to be serious.
ReplyDeleteI'm astounded that Heyman is only 49 years old.
ReplyDeleteSo the attitude era was all russo.....noted
ReplyDeleteThe segment with Paul and Dusty is probably the greatest single section of any DVD they've ever produced.
ReplyDeleteThe montage of Paul managing the Dangerous Alliance is second.
Really? He looks like he could be 70.
ReplyDeleteSo what are, in my opinion, their three best documentaries (this, the Punk doc, and the ECW doc) all have some degree of Paul Heyman involvement. Coincidence?
ReplyDeleteGlad you know her so well in real life
ReplyDeleteBob Bradley = All-time favorite jobber
ReplyDeleteNOT EVEN 64 GIGABYTES HAS AN AFFECT ON THIS MAN!
ReplyDeleteHaving to take direction from Paul Heyman is like having to chew on your own balls.
ReplyDeleteYour point? Even Russo's stuff was an ADHD, low-thought version of what Heyman was doing in ECW.
ReplyDeleteWell, keep in mind, she and her family had to endure TWO 9/11's
ReplyDeleteAll I ever heard him say was he didn't like how Warrior treated him and it soured his WM experience.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that before. I'm not saying I don't believe you; it's just new to me.
ReplyDeleteI would have Paul book. He just would NOT be in charge of the money.
ReplyDeleteHe said he saw the stars of ECW and thought they could be the superstars of the WWE so he took care of them, but Bischoff tried to buy them out so it cost him money. (or something like that)
ReplyDeleteYou took better photos than WWE.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty much it. Steph and Paul do not get along backatage, but she respects his ideas, no matter how much it bothers her.
ReplyDeleteThat's news to me, so OK.
ReplyDelete5/9/17 Superstars of Wrestling review? Zack Ryder vs Fandango! A main event in any arena in the country!
ReplyDeleteI think it's safe to deduce from the way she comes across in interviews, the way she cynically exploits charity donation, the way she compared 9-11 to her father's trial, the way she's obsessed with corporate nonsense-speak and the anecdotes from those who've worked with her that she might be an asshole. Of course, not knowing her personally, I may be wrong and she just comes across poorly all the time, including to those who do know her personally.
ReplyDeleteScott, are you going to review the Sting blu-ray at some point, or have you already watched it?
ReplyDeleteLOL. You might want to see a therapist, Gideon.
ReplyDeleteThe blu ray extras are pretty good too. Some very good stories!
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer if it was constantly cutting to shots of her chest.
ReplyDeleteThat mean Eric and that dirty Ted just kept trying to put her family out of business. Not like when her daddy extended a helping hand to struggling promoters by giving their stars new life on a national stage!
ReplyDeleteI can't go with Fistic Glory's assumptions, but Steph has always been a terrible babyface, just like her hubby. She's a delightful heel though. Just wish she learned from her dad's willingness to show ass on occasion and let the faces get some shine.
ReplyDeleteLooks like those ECW years aged the shit outta him.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they really had trouble building new threats without new acts to poach as easily. Part of the issue is that Hogan had already demolished everyone he could fight, and NOBODY looks strong after a dominating victory by HOGAN, so there was nowhere to go but down.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Steele did a better job than Byron Saxton did.
ReplyDeleteYeah - those are fantastic photos.
ReplyDeleteKinda like the only time SmackDown was ever watchable
ReplyDeleteThen it fits right in with current WWE!
ReplyDeleteYeah, but luckily WWE had better talent.
ReplyDeleteI can't agree there. Smackdown was awesome in 2009 and again in 2011 with the Orton/Christian/Henry/Sheamus stuff.
ReplyDeleteHer taking over as GM of Smackdown was what killed wrestling as must see, appointment tv for me.
ReplyDeleteBut a Tonberry is serious stuff.
ReplyDeleteWe sure did, also we got to take our seats home, I'll have to have Matt post a pic later.
ReplyDelete10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife
ReplyDeleteThey should hire us both we bring a real photojournalism degree and experience (me) enthusiasm and talent (us both).
ReplyDeleteVintage Heyman: beating himself up to feign a car accident to explain why he missed Joey Styles' wedding..a story Heyman maintains to this day.
ReplyDeleteI will always regret not being at XXX in person due to the live bands and Daniel Bryan's victories. That being said, DB won his belt, Seth cashed in, nothing like being their live, it was one of my favorite wrestling events and moments with Matt.
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I thought of that same thing just as soon I posted my comment.
ReplyDeleteNah, Heyman was just great business wise, financially on the other hand........
ReplyDeleteI like Roman Reigns a bit, mostly due to his looks and a few moves, he wasn't what the crowd wanted or the right winner for the belt, neither was Brock. Matt sat next to the man who apparently was the sole person in the 76,000+ crowd who was suprised when Seth came in. They had a highly anticipated, predicted and waited for moment and they blew the roof off it. I loved it and I wasn't alone in that.
ReplyDeletePlease do
ReplyDeleteKnow what? Fair/unfair is meaningless. Whether he had time to prepare or couldn't cope with Vince/Dunn/whoever yelling in his ear is irrelevant. If I'm Saxton, and that call comes, should I'm looking at that as my audition to be on the RAW broadcast team permanently. Saxton failed the audition. The "brass ring" analogy may be WAY off base when it comes to a guy like Cesaro or some other wrestlers, but it's dead on when it comes to what Saxton did Monday.
ReplyDeleteDon't enjoy Heyman as a performer, but his genius is undeniable. This sounds good.
ReplyDeleteWhy "nowhere near as good as last year's 'Mania"? Both Bryan matches were good last year. But what else?
ReplyDeleteThat's true for 1998-1999. The real good stuff of the attitude era is from 1997 (when the feuds felt real because the feuds you saw on TV were pretty much the feuds happening in the locker room) and 2000 (when every great worker in America came to WWE and nearly every segment of the show was of a main eventer or future main eventer.)
ReplyDeleteWas just about to say something similar. I mean your comment, not the LW's
ReplyDeleteI certainly won't argue against Heymans overall greatness, but his voice grates on me a lot of the time. His overblown intro of Brock at WM was almost physically uncomfortable to listen to.
ReplyDeleteI liked Edge saying how Paul was the last person to have the pulse of what the audience wants. I doubt the Hemsley's were too thrilled with that comment.
ReplyDeleteThankfully, Heyman's voice doesn't bother me. Cornette on commentary, however, is a different story.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, WWE just filled a 70,000 person stadium, so it wouldn't be that hard to convince someone to back him due to their being a clear demand. That and if the WWE went tits up, he'd have all the talent that WWE just lost. I mean. if WWE goes bankrupt it's not like they'd kill the wrestlers.
ReplyDeleteWow. I watched this doc this afternoon too. How come he never mentions his wife?
ReplyDeleteHHH definitely has a firm grip on what NXT fans want but Steph couldn't find a pulse with a blood pressure monitor.
ReplyDeleteCrockett was still working for WCW in a consulting capacity after the buyout I believe.
ReplyDeleteWe did see that. It was the Smackdown Six and it was awesome.
ReplyDeleteShe may have requested that.
ReplyDeleteI also loved the Punk stuff. Saying if Heyman weren't there he would have already quit.
ReplyDelete"I love wrestlemania Maggle!"
ReplyDeleteLuckily for the WWE, they had lots of money so they could take advantage of the better ideas of smaller promotions?
ReplyDeleteJust buy a PS4.
ReplyDeleteMy point isn't that the Attitude Era is perfect. My point is that if Stephanie McMahon's dismissive attitude towards Paul Heyman is pretty offensive. Without Paul Heyman, her father's company wouldn't have won the Monday Night War.
ReplyDeleteOh wait. I'm sorry. DX won the Monday Night War with dick jokes. Remember?
Actually, I agree about Cornette on commentary. I enjoyed Heymans commentary with JR.
ReplyDeleteliterally.
ReplyDeleteExcept Curtis Axel.
ReplyDeleteDid not know this.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, Heyman said that he himself was never paid.
ReplyDeleteBut Daredevil is about to come out!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the new Crockett promotion with Heyman booking would have done if it ever got off the ground.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that.
ReplyDeleteThe same has been said about Triple H
ReplyDeleteNasty?
ReplyDeleteBro you buying the gimmick just a bit too much?
Those who have worked with her?
ReplyDeleteLike EX employees that may have an ax to grind?
I have the weirdest boner.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Though to be fair. After an orgy, I prefer something all natural. A quinoa salad or something. It's important to carbo-load the day before an orgy but you don't want to feel loagy during the hours leading up to, or after an orgy. A hearty breakfast leading up to the event and a lot of greens at lunch. Then afterwards, maybe some fruit.
ReplyDeleteI'm just going off what I've seen of her out-of-character interviews, anecdotes I've heard from people who've worked with her and the way she conducts herself in WWE in an off-camera context. I might be wrong but I definitely think she's her Daddy's daughter and if she has no use for you or feels spurned, she can turn on you in a nasty way. I remember comedian Patrice O'Neal wrote for WWE for a while. He asked Stephanie for a night off (not a Raw or Smackdown or PPV night) to do a stand-up set and she said no. He quit. He said she was calling him for weeks afterward, often very late at night, and just cursing him out, etc. She sounds like a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteEdge is awesome because he genuinely doesn't give a shit, but he doesn't come off mean and bitter like Punk. I love how he says what he wants without even considering what Vince or whoever will think of it.
ReplyDeleteUgh, Corny's commentary is like nails on a chalkboard for me. I tried listening to his podcast and got about five minutes in.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird to think that he was only 25-26 during the Dangerous Alliance era. And not even 30 when he took over ECW.
ReplyDeleteI know I'll be in the minority, but I never found Madusa hot until her 1999 Giant Fake Boobs era. That Halloween Havoc bikini segment was terrific.
ReplyDeleteHeyman's introductions for Brock are worth the price of admission alone
ReplyDeleteAnd Cesaro.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know his anecdote is true and not just a gimmick or a bit itself? The first part I can buy, the last part seems like hyperbole.
ReplyDeleteHogan-Warrior II
ReplyDeleteSavage-Flair
Sid-Taker
The way he told the story, it didn't sound like hyperbole. Maybe he was lying, who knows? Maybe everyone's lying? Maybe there's no such thing as truth. Again, I'm just going off the various interviews I'd heard with former creative team members, anecdotes from people who've worked there and my own instincts based on how she comes across in interviews and her business dealings.
ReplyDeleteI do like that there's people defending Stephanie from my comments but no-one has leapt to defend the Bellas! Haha. At least we're in agreement on that!
It was missing that spark for me. There were some things that seemed pretty haphazard plus it didn't really have that satisfactory feeling you get.
ReplyDelete"Our company is not liable for hanging him from the ceiling with no training by a stunt crew we hired with the lower bid"
ReplyDeleteand fives minutes after a guy drops head from the ceiling in the arena they shove Debra through the curtain to dance around in her puppy bikini outfit
Just watched it. Anyone with the actual DVD/Blu Ray: are the black and white during blood and beeps over cuss words on there, too?
ReplyDeleteFor a minute, I thought the first pic you took from your seat was a video....due to the Wrestlemania logo.
ReplyDeletesure, it's the widow that is the problem, right
ReplyDeleteWhat if it was a Nokia?
ReplyDelete(It's an old meme)
It is pretty good and pretty honest. The gaps are glaring, though.
ReplyDeleteIs Davey Boy underrated historically? Considering that he literally had to carry the Bulldogs' matches from 87 on, that's a good addition to his already good singles resume.
ReplyDeletePerhaps you're profession should be taking pictures, because I'll give you that much. However, as a wrestling analysis, you're a moron. You seriously said the ladder match could have been better with more dangerous spots? In a time where we are realizing all the grueling things these high-impact spots take on someone's body, after a wrestler died from a similar problem Edge had from, as he said, TLC matches taking years off his body, you're advocating for more dangerous spots. What kind of low-life are you? Do you know what makes a ladder match better without the need of taking high-risked spots? I know you don't but I'll tell you anyways. A well-told story.
ReplyDeleteIn short, fuck off Perri.
Comedian Jensen Karp was telling nightmare stories of her as if they were funny - not like he was complaining. More of a "Look at this crazy person I worked with!"
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to discount the opinions of everybody who worked with her but doesn't now, you're left with those who still have her as boss. I'm sure they'll be happy to speak out against her...
Thanks for you feedback! :D
ReplyDeleteI put about a dozen of the stage videos on my Facebook and so many people complained to me that the "photos were nice but the videos wouldn't start", which I thought was great. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, his voice is probably the main reason I don't enjoy the guy's promos or commentary. No matter how eloquent he is, it just grates too much.
ReplyDeleteBut the company put it in the doc anyway, so I doubt they care that much.
ReplyDeleteI think she was just paying tribute to Punk's last WWE match where he did the exact same thing...
ReplyDeleteShe's the closest I've come to wish real life ill-will on a character. I just want her to never be on screen so, so badly.
ReplyDeleteThanks, TPrincess! It was an incredible weekend. I think, if I ever do this again, I will slow down and enjoy it rather than report it.
ReplyDeleteHave to agree with everybody else, the pics were amazing. Enjoyed these writeups, glad you two had what looked like a great time....
ReplyDeleteI tried to enjoy this Heyman doc, problem is I think every word out of his mouth is bullshit. So, it's similar to most WWE docs, to me.
ReplyDelete2011 Rumble and Elimination Chamber might be the only good PPVs of 2011.
ReplyDelete"Hey ma! I came to Washington, and I get to see Bush!"
ReplyDeleteSo she's a true McMahon?
ReplyDeleteEh, he's a comedian. Even if the story is based in truth, it's guaranteed to be embellished. So one time being cursed out turns into "weeks of phone calls". And there's always other details that get left out because they're not pertinent to the joke.
ReplyDeleteHere's an example. There's a semi-famous Youtube clip for the Family Feud with Steve Harvey where the survey is "Name something that begins with 'Pork'". Steve tells the story about it in his final standup special (Grand Stand-up Finale from 2012), but his version doesn't completely sync with the Youtube clip. It's extremely close, but he adds some flair to it to make it funnier. I have no doubt Jensen Karp did the same.
And if you haven't seen the clip or heard Steve talk about it, look up both ASAP. The guy's answer is just tremendous.
Jesus H Christ. He looked 49 back in ECW
ReplyDeleteThe 3-4 weeks where he completely lost his shit was the funniest Bryan character, bar none.
ReplyDeleteI think it's when he was verging on a near breakdown with the whole 'NO! NO! NO!' thing and would be getting in fan's faces and stuff.
Gold.
And much much much better production.
ReplyDeleteYeah, because what wrestling needs is a bunch of great angles that will never get paid off...
ReplyDeleteEdge main evented Mania, has fuck you money--and really, achieved a peak for his character. Booking was generally kind to Edge, he was allowed to push his slimy heeling as high up the card as it could go.
ReplyDeleteHe has less to be bitter about than Punk in my opinion, who will always have a "what if" dating back to 2011.
This isn't to take away from Edge, he seems like a good guy, and I'm happy he's happy given the way his career ended.
Fuck Stephanie? Nah. Chicks pumped full of HGH and silicone aren't my thing, and the voice gives me an instant migraine.
ReplyDeletePuts his mistakes in perspective.
ReplyDeleteHe was practically a kid compared to the men he was battling.
You keep your anti ECW bias to yourself mister.
ReplyDeleteVince Russo didn't invent the swerve.
ReplyDeleteIt's warranted on this doc tho because she was Paul's boss on Smackdown and their working relationship is some of the best stuff on the doc.
ReplyDeleteDangerous Alliance Medusa was crazy hot. Also count me in the club that never enjoyed MVC.
ReplyDeleteYou must torrent or buy the extras. Tons of hilarious stories, just as entertaining I not more than the doc. It's 2 or 3 hours and well worth tracking down if you enjoyed the main program.
ReplyDeleteI think so
ReplyDeleteStef kept it diplomatic because she knows that everyone else knows that if Heyman wanted to he could go off on her place in the professional wrestling business if he wanted to... and he'd be right, as usual
ReplyDeletegreatest mind in wrestling, hired Motorcity Madman to go after Luger
ReplyDeleteIt's like people forget (ignore) that he booked SmackDown too, and Ohio Valley...
ReplyDeleteI love ECW.
ReplyDeleteI love Heyman on the mic. His commentary adds so much to WMX7 in my opinion. It's an additional awesome factor of that event; the only Mania with Heyman/Ross commentary
ReplyDeleteI thought this very thing while watching the documentary
ReplyDeleteFor all Punk was likely deserving of a better spot and a better push, sometimes being a whinging egocentric dick will do nothing more than hold you back. He never learned any form of diplomacy whatsoever, from what I can gather, and that won't get you anywhere in *any* form of entertainment.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you have to play the game (no pun intended) to get ahead. Even if it goes against everything you believe.
Edge was opinionated, but he also made it clear he was a loyal company man at the same time, so he was embraced.
I didn't think that was Heyman's fault, really. The company took the guy's immense babyface momentum, culminating in the ARMBAR win, and fucked it all out of the window overnight to turn him into the most generic of generic heels, and even Heyman couldn't save that. The crowd had wanted to cheer him, and if they'd let him run as a face for a while he would have been seriously over, imo.
ReplyDeleteThey neutered him. Badly. Then complained that he wasn't lighting arenas up.
What's not often spoken of is that Edge owes much of his success to rarely if ever being on the same brand as HHH. That's not to detract from Copeland's success at all, by the way.
ReplyDeleteAnd he's lying about that too.
ReplyDeleteIt's included in the 2005 ONS promo package.
ReplyDeleteConsidering his tag career and singles career, Edge actually doesn't get the credit he deserves for being one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
ReplyDeleteWell, you didn't say that. You started off on a concept of HHH keeping NXT afloat, not keeping WWE afloat.
ReplyDeleteShe'd get a job with Komen and even being an insider, she'd assume that it was a money grabbing sort of fraudulent organization.
ReplyDeleteFair enough. Top to bottom, I enjoyed this one more than last year's with the exception of the Rock/Rousey/Authority segment which was too long and boring.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand Heyman on commentary, but I love him during interviews and doing the ring-intro. I would have preferred King at WMX7, tbh.
ReplyDeleteCornette on commentary is one thing. But his shoots I love. Can listen for hours upon hours. His podcast is for some reason different. Plus, you know, Alice.
ReplyDelete"Your hosts are George "The Animal" Steele (subbing for Bobby Heenan, who was selling the injuries he suffered after Ken Patera threw him across the ring last week)"
ReplyDeleteYou hear that, Cole you fuck?
I liked Doc in 1989 but MVC? Hated them. They really ruin GAB 92, a show I otherwise enjoy.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I honestly believe he could be in the main event by now had they kept him as a babyface and had him, you know, wrestle his heart out with the right people.
ReplyDeleteYeah, given how many writers the WWE goes through, I can't see Steph even taking the time to bother repeatedly calling this guy who probably didn't matter much to the company in the grand scheme of things.
ReplyDeleteSo, in your time of watching wrestling, who do you rank as the best three on the mic?
ReplyDeleteFor me:
1. Bobby Heenan
2. Paul Heyman
3. Roddy Piper
Benoit?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know all of that. One part of the 2010 lawsuit filing was Martha alleging that WWE had no right to use Owen's name/likeness when using their old footage. WWE got that part of the suit dismissed. In April 2012, some of Martha's claims were allowed to proceed, but that wasn't one of them.
ReplyDeleteHow long did Dynamite stay out with the back injury? Did he ever have another good match anywhere after the injury?
ReplyDeleteIt's not Cole's fault he's being brought back.
ReplyDeleteor Hogan
ReplyDelete"So he is not really immortal?"
Some people just go through their lives looking for ways to be 'offended'. Its all self righteous phony forced empathy. Glad I dont have that problem and can enjoy things
ReplyDeleteIt is to liberals
ReplyDeletewell it is done by people who feel inferior and are looking for ways to give themselves an artificial sense of superiority.
ReplyDeletebecause the most talented of the three was the one involved in both.
ReplyDeleteKozloff of all people has a clean win over him as well.
ReplyDeleteor itll go something like "And then there was these two LOD ripoffs we made". Not because I think of them like that (they're my favorite team ever) but its the way that WWE themselves seems to treat them.
ReplyDeleteCould have sworn Rock pinned him clean in mid-late 98(during Rock's brief face period). I think it was a tag match on Raw but I'm too lazy to look and I have no idea what caused the pin.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed watching this clown bomb hard in WCW. He squandered so much crowd goodwill with his garbage promos and rants. He sucked.
ReplyDeleteYep. Martha is 1000% right. There's no way WWE should be allowed to profit by having Owen in there fake HOF.
