few quick questions
1. would wwe be honestly interested in the TNA tape library?
2. How much would it honestly cost them (over/under 200k)?
3. Would anyone outside wwe be interested (which i assume no which would only drive the price down right)?
4. what would wwe do it? throw it up on the network? make a flat line and fall of tna dvd? use it for kurt angle and sting docs?
5. anything else im missing that you'd like to add?

1. Yes, of course. Vince made more money off WCW in DVD sales than he paid for the entire company by a lot. Pretty sure getting the TNA library and doing a "Life and Death of..." set burying them would justify whatever paltry sum they would need to pay out.
2. There's a set rate that WWE offers for footage and I doubt TNA would need to exceed that.
3. WWE would be the only buyer.
4. As you noted, they'd make a couple of DVD sets mocking the death of the promotion and use the rest to pad out Sting Volume 2 or wacky YouTube shows about how stupid TNA was.
5. Just to once again plug my Sporting News column from last year, which still draws numbers to this day. Maybe DA should give me the timeslot instead:
They don't seem to have any sort of desire to put up old WCW and ECW footage with any sort of regularity, or even old episodes of Raw. They'd probably buy the footage just to have it and then never use any of it.
ReplyDeleteHe definitely couldn't title a TNA set Rise and Fall, because you see, there never was a Rise.
ReplyDeleteThat footage only makes/made $$$ for them in DVD sales. No one is pay $10 a month for old ECW footage, just an add-on. That's why they don't have the desire. It's stupid but that's their rationale.
ReplyDeleteFall of TNA DVD would be interesting because Vince has nothing to lie about for his ego. He never considered them competition, and still may not be aware they exist.
ReplyDeleteA Samoa Joe DVD and Team 3D DVD would recoup the costs.
ReplyDeleteThe fucking Ding Dongs. JAYSUS!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm Vince, I don't give a shit, but might as well buy it with the money in my couch cushions to fill out my Angle/Hardy/Dudley library (as well as Joe eventually once he ascends in the company) and let everything else rot.
ReplyDeleteSo wwe putting tna talent over their own homegrown talent?
ReplyDeleteYou've been doing that Sporting News column for nearly a year now? Time fucking flies.
ReplyDeleteYou could have complete sets for guys like Jeff Hardy, Bubba Ray, Kurt Angle, etc.
ReplyDeletePlus, if any TNA guys end up coming to NXT and doing well you have their stuff too.
And, yes, a hatchet job on TNA a la the first Warrior disk would be awesome. Maybe a Jeff Jarrett burial DVD, too. I'd be down with that.
TNA? That's a great idea for a company name pal! Let's rename NXT!
ReplyDeleteWhatever gets us Wolfe/Joe/Anderson matches for Best of Angle.
ReplyDeleteThey have a whole network so 10 years of ready made programming for a pittence wouldn't be a bad investment.
ReplyDeleteHe booked the fucking Nasty Boys.... Brian Knobb walked in with a CANE!! A Fucking CANE!!
ReplyDeleteThe baby's first step/first stumble and dramatic fall with a head bump to the couch.
ReplyDeleteThe Ding Dongs played by 2 Cold Scorpio and Jimmy Golden would have been a much better team.
ReplyDelete"Instantly pushing > any < WWE veteran over the existing homegrown roster [...]"
ReplyDeleteI think that's the big point about this. no one thinks it would have been a good idea for every of the "WWE guys" (Angle being the most obvious one) to be just a midcarder.
but constantly putting "WWE rejects" over guys they have made themselves was just stupid. it made the whole company look bad and also destroyed the faith of the fans (because why even cheer along as some young worker gets more and more over if he will be shoved aside the next time again anyway? case in point: Austin Aries).
Kind of long.
ReplyDeletethey'd make the money back just from a second Sting DVD
ReplyDeleteYes, and it was Angle's first match. And it wasn't like he needed the rub.
ReplyDeleteI would honestly really enjoy it if WWE Network put all the TNA PPVs on The Metwork. For as much shit as we give TNA they did put out some good stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe Clash they debuted on was awesome. JR calling them either Ding and Dong or Ding Dong #1 and Ding Dong #2 was great.
ReplyDeleteThat was just Arn saying he liked Schiavone's hair.
ReplyDeleteInstead Joe lost his very first Venture outside the X-Division to a guy that had more attachment to your competition.
ReplyDeleteI could see them wanting the Joe footage now, but man, when you talk about guys like Angle, Sting, Hogan, Jeff Hardy...?
ReplyDeleteI guess Angle had some good matches early on, but the rest? I can't think of any TNA Jeff Hardy footage that has any place besides on a Self-Destruction of Jeff Hardy DVD, Hogan's promos were awful and matches were worse and Sting's TNA tenure was either him doing half-awake rehashes of Crow Sting's Greatest Hits, his audition to play Heath Ledger playing The Joker in the next Batman movie or his famed "I'm not working out and I don't plan on it; yes, I'm wrestling in a t-shirt; I don't give a fuck" phase.
Joe got that prominent spot while maintaining free agent status!?
ReplyDeleteHe was saying ridiculous things like Abyss being the John Cena of TNA though (he's pretty obviously the Kane of TNA in every possible way you can mimic Kane) - if he had been a reasonable and sane salesman of the product and had more modest aspirations and spent money wisely and not hired his friends and not did 90% of the stuff he did, who knows, maybe he would have worked out.
ReplyDeleteIf they used him the way he's used in WWE (hype man/schill/pitch dude) he would have been tolerable.
From what Cornette says here it was more of a lack of marketing and business sense than bad booking that caused WCW to lose so much money.
ReplyDeletefrom the department of This Will Never Happen ... WWE creates a cruiserweight/x-division style belt with all these smaller guys they have from NXT and others like Stardust/Cody. Hence they can use the footage.
ReplyDeleteI see Vince as just the highest form of tape trader. He'll snatch up all the stuff he can, then probably only watch 10% of it...
ReplyDelete... but at least he'll have it.
THIS^^^ he's starting a whole new organization just to put himself over Again!
ReplyDeleteI think for me Joe is going to be a lot like religion. I don't understand it at all, it seems silly to me but I wish I did like it because it seems to make everyone around me so happy. On an unrelated note I miss Nigel. With guys like Punk, Joe, Cesero, Daniel Bryan, Steen, Rollins all getting goes at the top well not Joe yet. To me Nigel was a better talker than all of them and a better wrestler than all of them except MAYBE Bryan and I'd argue strongly against that. Seems like his illness and being about ten years too late have cost him a hell of an entertaining run.
ReplyDeleteWell since Jeff and Vince are cool now thats not going to happen and since Vince doesn't even acknowledge TNA and they have never been more than an indy promotion I seriously doubt anyone is wasting their time to put together a DVD even to bury them.
ReplyDeleteSome schmuck intern might.
ReplyDeleteJoe trained with Cena, didn't he?
ReplyDeleteMeltzer says it's a deal similar to Rhyno and Kendrick. WWE has first refusal, I would assume, similar to TNA allowing their talents to work indies but can pull them for any reason (Bully Ray in June of last year was pulled from House of Hardcore in Philly at the last minute because Dixie wanted him at some Spike awards thing. The crowd was pissed, but got a great show anyway)
ReplyDeleteI didn't say I don't get why people don't like me. I said I don't understand why you're so upset that I don't like the same shit as you. Reading comprehension is your friend. Of course you're seeing red with anger typing manifestos to me on why I'm wrong for liking what I like and how NXT is the same thing as RAW circa 98. There is no reasoning with a crazy person so I'll leave you be. You're probably rocking back and forth clutching your NXT shirt right now waiting for someone to DARE say that Vince Russo's show in 98 was more enjoyable to them than NXT in 2015. I anticipate your hate filled manifesto of a response because we both know you won't be able to help yourself you'll HAVE to respond to tell me how wrong I am, and how I'm an asshole clown. Sadly though I won't respond you don't seem to have the basic skills needed to have a conversation.
ReplyDeleteYeah but, but much. MORE would they make with than without it?
ReplyDeleteIt's funny that on NXT, Ryder's actually a big dude.
ReplyDeleteThat was my tape trading life in a nutshell.
ReplyDeleteI might need to watch Sunday Night Heat 1999 at some point! -Me
ReplyDeleteI've at least mastered the art of the paragraph, and not being a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteIN YOUR WORDS!
"So yeah basically the shows are there for storyline purposes only short matches with in conclusive finishes to set up pay per views where they wrestled."
Let's narrow in on a phrase there.
"pay per views where they wrestled"
This is NXT's version of a PPV where they then proceeded to wrestle. Exactly like the product you say you like did things. Now unless you preferred the Raws from 98 to the PPVs of 98 (which...why?) I fail to see how NXT isn't EXACTLY what you want.
Also, if you watch the NXT weekly product, it's mostly short matches (with the occasional long marquee match-up) and backstage interviews/skits/vignettes.
...I know you're just a contrary douchebag whose next words are going to be how NXT is boring or 98 Raws were different because of some reason that doesn't really matter. I know that debating another person on the internet with the intent to change their mind is stupid. But I just want to explain to everybody who might glance over this just how inane your comments are.
A face Muta feuding with a heel Flair would have been dynamite.
ReplyDeleteI got that one too. Never been a tna watcher but that was a good disc.
ReplyDeleteFUCK TNA. I'M SO GLAD THIS SHITTY FED IS FINALLY DYING. HAVING TNA AROUND IS NOT GOOD FOR WRESTLING NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEIR RETARDED FAN ABSE SAYS OTHERWISE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, why I needed to make sure I had live PPV versions of all the WWF PPVs is beyond me... and I never even began to touch the 4 years of ROH I have.
ReplyDeleteFUCK TNA. FUCK THAT STUPID PIECE OF SHIT OF A COMPANY. DIXIE CARTER IS A MAJOR DUMBASS BITCH HO
ReplyDeletehttp://shop.wwe.com/Samoa-Joe-%22Submission-Specialist%22-Authentic-T-Shirt/W09731,default,pd.html?dwvar_W09731_color=black&start=1&q=samoa%20joe
ReplyDeleteI disagree on #8 and #7 -- they weren't horrible ideas (actually, #8 was a brilliant idea and the only logical way anyone ever found to turn Sting heel, and #7 brought about the best retcon with the Bully videos that I've EVER seen in wrestling). The problem is that they were great ideas with TNA's usual inept follow-thru. MEM fell apart because Russo can't have logical follow-throughs to his stories (OK, so we have this group -- rather than have them feud with people who MAKE SENSE for them to feud with, instead let's have them feud with Rhyno)
ReplyDeleteI'd say Hogan. Bischoff, and Russo were the #2, #3, and #4 biggest mistakes TNA ever made. Letting idiots run your shows just because they knew how to persuade you were the dumbest things they've ever done. All 3 of these idiots were INSTRUMENTAL in the downfall of WCW, so what made Dixie's moronic self think that TNA would fare any better?
#1 is DEFINITELY trying to "out-WWE WWE".
Even if TNA were putting on the best product on the planet, they would never be able to reach the ratings or public perception of WWE. It took WWE 30+ years (if we're just talking about the Vince Jr term) to get where they are. There's no way that TNA could have gotten to their level quickly, if ever.
I still would like to know what their international deals are like. Can they survive on their foreign market?
ReplyDeleteShorter than "tna's inexorable march into oblivion as presented by existentialists who told us they were French so we took them at their strongly accented word."
ReplyDeleteGiven the t-shirts selling out report, they've gotta do something with him. It's not like he's got a bunch of years left in the biz - he had a tryout match with WWF in 2001, for crying out loud.
ReplyDelete::remembers that mcguinness was briefly in tna, sniffles sadly at the wasted potential::
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy that his T-Shirt sold out on WWE's shop site in a matter of hours, just from one in ring confrontation at the end of their developmental rosters show.
ReplyDeleteThat bit is in the trailer, and it seems like Arn was referring to the fact that Tony had so many kids.
ReplyDelete"WWE aren't interested in Samoa Joe"
ReplyDeletewhat's that? He made them money by basically walking to the ring in a shirt?
I'm not so sure they would make a Rise and Fall type of set of TNA--they've never really acknowledged them as legitimate competition. Maybe as part of an NWA documentary and definitely as part of sets for Sting, Christian, Joe, Angle, etc.
ReplyDeleteVince doesn't know much about wrestling outside of his world ... but he'll notice Joe's t-shirt has sold out lol
ReplyDeleteFoley has said that Joe's been on Hunter's radar for awhile, plus Joe trained with John Cena so he has friends in high places. Its probably mostly Vince.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the Umaga gimmick for him, but he didn't want to do it?
ReplyDeleteThat, the best of AJ 1&2, best of the X-Division, Best of the Tag Teams.
ReplyDeleteBuy those and you have everything that was good in TNA.
I can never figure out how much of a failure they were at marketing DVDs, it's money for old rope, even Indy feds knew the importance of DVDs. Nowadays the bigger Indy feds have on demand video ffs.
A lot of empty arena stories. It sounds like no one was really watching, which is what I'd always assumed.
ReplyDeleteI always thought Umaga was their answer to Joe. At the time Joe looked like a can't miss prospect and TNA didn't look like they were going to Fuck him up (but you know drug addict Kurt becomes available what are you going to do?) so I wouldn't blame him. I was looking more at the recent years when TNA were wasting him and WWE needed talent.
ReplyDeleteI read it as a comment on him having a bunch of kids.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, if Joe continues getting back in shape he could be a worthwhile talent for 2-3 years in WWE.
ReplyDeletethe last thing I remember him being in taht was in any way interesting was that nation of violence thing
ReplyDeleteIm sure all the chicks you have over will love them though.
ReplyDeleteIn order to do a Rise and Fall of TNA DVD, wouldn't TNA had to have... you know, RISEN?
ReplyDeleteYeah TNA from 2004-2006 was great on PPV. They actually turned out a pretty interesting product and did a great job of having pronouned strengths that WWE did not (tag team wrestling and cruiserweight/X-Division guys). I actually purchased 2 or 3 of their ppvs and bought some more on DVD.
ReplyDeleteThen the brought Russo into book and tried to be "WWE light" and never recovered.
Jeff Jarrett still has a minority interest in TNA. He'll invoke that to buy what is left.
ReplyDeleteHe can renounce his Samoan heritage and become Regular Joe.
ReplyDeleteJonah Simona
ReplyDeleteComplete Jeff Hardy, Sting, Dudley Boyz, Kurt Angle retrospectives make it worth whatever change is in Vince's limo to acquire it.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's all digital already, they wouldn't even need to convert it. Just upload that shit right on the network.
ReplyDeleteThey wasted so much not make Samoa Joe their world champion in 2006. Instead of Sting -> Abyss -> Christian (again).
ReplyDeleteBut that was Russo and relying on guys that USED TO draw instead of making NEW DRAWS.
I think striking while the iron was hot and going right to Joe-Angle was smart enough business wise, it was having Joe tap out and then doing two more rematches right away that was dumb. Have him wrestle even with Angle for 30+minutes and then get caught with a small package or something and it doesn't hurt him at all, then he can go back to destroying guys and win the title to build up to a big rematch down the road.
ReplyDeleteYeah - I miss JR shouting out during the Raw staredowns/beatdowns when the announcers just go silent.
ReplyDeleteNot that I want any of the current announce team to be saying anything, but it often leaves the moment a bit flat.
"Death Spiral: The TNA Story"
ReplyDelete"TNA: The Little Engine That Shit The Bed"
ReplyDeleteI was the same way. Recorded all the Raws and SNHs, eventually lost all the tapes between two moves.
ReplyDeleteBut what is a complete retrospective? Not every match anyone has ever had.
ReplyDeleteThe big ones. The important ones.
Did Hardy, Sting or the Dudleys (as a team) ever have any must-see matches in TNA?
Nah, he should be the official odds-maker for each and every WWE match on Raw.
ReplyDeleteBob Backlund certified.
ReplyDeleteLoved the show. Banks/Lynch was fantastic and I would have been fine with either winning. I also loved the little things...for example, when Sasha won, the ref went to raise her hand and she pulled away and made him raise the other, because he tried to raise her injured arm. For some reason getting a victory didn't immediately heal all wounds. Certain main roster main event men could learn something from the NXT women.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Hogan put the kibosh on it, but they had Roode win the BFG series and he was supposed to get the big babyface title win. Sometime before the show they realized James Storm was the guy they should be pushing, which Hogan openly admitted on a radio show promoting the pay per view - that weekend, no less. So, Roode loses the match they build him up to win so Storm can win the title on Impact instead. And then lose it to Roode, who turned heel, to lead to Storm winning it back - which didn't end up happening.
ReplyDeleteOne of only two TNA DVDs I got - the other one being the PPV which had Joe vs Angle on it.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a very small group that could get deals like that. Probably just former WWE guys like Rhyno, Joe, and maybe Styles right now. Styles and Joe have just enough name value (say, more than Steen or Devitt) that it's probably in WWEs best interests to just let them keep the name, especially if they can tie it into a marketing deal where WWE may not own the name but can still use it for what they want.
ReplyDeleteAgree completely. Hardy over Aries. Rvd over styles. Angle over Joe. Sting over Joe. Angle over Roode. They never missed a chance to put wwe and wcw vets over their homegrown guys.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame they banned giving heels managers so they wouldn't have to talk for themselves.
ReplyDeleteI've been ripping TNA for so long I almost forgot how much I enjoyed it on FSN in 2004-2005
ReplyDeleteActually, that wasn't their fault at all.
ReplyDeleteNigel came in, did great, and then was pretty much a non-factor due to health reasons for a year.
TNA didn't waste his potential, sadly. It was just bad timing for all involved.
Yeah, but we knew he would book the Nasty Boys. But to take it as far as he did showed just how little interest he had in the existing product.
ReplyDeleteVince could probably do a one night only TNA special and sell out 10000 seats as an ultimate troll job on TNA management. I'd watch.
ReplyDelete4.25 star Women's match in USA? Inconceivable!
ReplyDeleteGiven how many ex-WWE guys have been in TNA it seems well worth it.
ReplyDeleteGiven the protracted failure of TNA will we ever again see another serious attempt at competition for WWE?
ReplyDeleteYeah, sorry, didn't mean to assign blame, just sad about it. Intense segments with Angle, then nothing.
ReplyDelete"Well since Jeff and Vince are cool now"
ReplyDeleteMy all time favorite IWC trope - where we can divine two people's entire personal history off a three line, six year old Meltzer report. Sure, they were cordial at Jarrett's wife's funeral, so now (years later) we know they are so "cool" and Vince would never put out a hatchet job DVD on TNA. After all, they shook hands and spoke in a few hushed whispers that one time!
Yeah, everything you mentioned here is when I knew TNA was gone.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it go there other way too? We only know they weren't cool because of even older dirt sheet reports. So that's very flaw?ed logic. Isn't that what we do here all the time take reports and assume we know what we are talking about
ReplyDeleteDefine competition.
ReplyDeleteNo, I see your point. We're always extrapolating knowledge from flimsy dirtsheet reports. But what kills me is when people online think they know the entire complex history of two people based on (for example) a story from 1994 and 1999. As if our own relationships with friends, co-workers are that simplistic.
ReplyDeleteBut when it's people we don't know, we're all like "Oh they freaking hate each other! Remember after that one Raw in 2003 when Hurricane Helms told McMahon Chavo Guerrero was too stiff in their match....WHAT?! They took an Instagram together! That makes no sense - they're fucking moral enemies."
In the U.S.? No. But internationally NJPW is about there.
ReplyDeleteLike a TNA One Night Stand? I could see that.
ReplyDeleteNo he doesn't, he sold the rest of it 5 or 6 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI doubt Vince has watched a single second of the tape library he's bought.
ReplyDeleteHe did get hepatitis while working for TNA, they at least deserve some of the blame.
ReplyDeleteIf Vince wanted to do a Jarrett burial DVD he's got plenty of WWF\E and WCW footage to do it. My guess is that even if he wanted to he's got the sense to know that it wouldn't make any money. Who the fuck would buy a Jeff Jarrett DVD?
ReplyDelete"But that was Russo and relying on guys that USED TO draw instead of making NEW DRAWS."
ReplyDeleteTo be fair that's McMahon too.
Just like WWE is to blame for Hardy?
ReplyDeleteIf there was an outbreak of Hep B around TNA, or they had him wrestle matches with someone who they knew had it, yeah, it'd be there fault.
With all of the crap TNA deserves (and it's a LOT), I just always find it funny that people stretch to find stuff they have no real blame in, and actually handled as well as possible.
Not true. He still owns his part.
ReplyDeleteNo, he doesn't. He sold his remaining shares sometime around late 2009-early 2010.
ReplyDeleteEveryone in that arena knew the wrong guy went over in Rhyno v Corbin, but I get why.
ReplyDeleteDana Brooke was working her ass off. She's green and limited but she was watching so intently, and she's visibly better than at the last taping cycle.
Hard to say how much was Banks being legit great, but Becky Lynch impressed the fuck out of my living room. She was terrible up until a few weeks ago when they gave her the ball and she's ran clean away with it.
I was disappointed Team SAWFT didn't turn heel on Carmella but thrilled that they didn't win. I just don't like them as faces. Bliss turning heel = YES! Finally the pretty cheerleader turns evil!

Oh, man I can just imagine the talking heads on WWE's "Histiory of TNA" DVD:
ReplyDeleteTriple H: Because Jeff Jarrett was related to the guy in charge, they kept the World Title on him, and had him deliver boring 25-minute promos! What kind of company does that?
R Truth: I realized I would never get pushed in TNA, and that I had to come to WWE for proper opportunities.
Brock Lesnar They made the ring have six sides? Who wants to watch matches where the ring has more than four sides?
Michael Cole: They hired this goof, Don West, who knew nothing about this business, and who they got from some show where he sold merchandise, to do commentary.: What kind of company has their commentators be clueless about what is going on in the ring, and spend the whole show trying to put over everything BUT the company itself?
The Miz: They kept bringing in people who had no background in this business, and giving them time they should have given to the stars themselves.
Some corporate submissive bottom: They brought in guys like Hogan, Flair, Nash, Hall and Waltman, and gave time to them that should have been given to the stars themselves. Hey, these guys are great, they're legends, but what kind of company gives valuable in-ring time to guys like Sting, Hogan and Nash when they should be building for the future?
Vince McMahon: I wanted them to succeed. I like healthy competition. The last thing I want is to have complete control of this business, and see men and women out of a job.

Then I guess TNA lied when they published a statement in December 2013 where they specifically stated, "We wish him the very best and look forward to his continued participation as an investor in TNA Wrestling."

Russo was there off and on from day one.
ReplyDeleteUntil NJPW has an English broadcast team and a regular TV slot it will remain a niche organization in the US.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is that no-one today cares that much. By intent. Which baffles me - Premier League commentators go nuts when there's a goal, UFC commentators go nuts at a knock-out. WWE commentators seem way too muted nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI agree Ross would lose his shit constantly even if what we were watching was lame he'd just keep shouting trying to convince us it was a big fucking deal.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem with 52 weeks of TV a year. I mean maybe you get 6 or 7 amazing shows, 10 good shows, and the rest are okay at best.
ReplyDeleteWhoa balor and breeze was not 4 stars. You really overrated that. To me it was kind of disappointing. At best it was 3 1/4 stars or just 3 stars.
ReplyDelete
