Crisis is hot garbage by today's standards. Recommended for historical value only, which probably wouldn't mean anything to a new reader/non-fan anyway.
Go with the original Infinity Gauntlet, for older stuff. Something more modern - try Annihilation.
Civil War is a good starting point for new readers. Infinity Gauntlet holds up pretty well and is important to the MCU. On the dc side, Blackest Night is fun but it helps to read the other Green Lantern stories leading up. I'm not a big advocate of event comics myself. Most of them suck.
Events are rarely good. Here's my top 3. Top 5, really
1. Annihilation - I almost surprise myself putting this first. But, in retrospect... it's perfect. It's completely disconnected from the mainstream Marvel U (which makes it much more accessible,) tells you everything you need to know about Marvel's cosmic properties and... well.... it's a fucking great story. If you want to know why Marvel took a chance on a "Guardians of the Galaxy" film, this is where the seeds were sown.
2. The X-Men Messiah Trilogy (Messiah Complex/Messiah War/Second Coming) - Want all the X-Men being awesome without drowning in 90's dialogue during fights? This is your go-to story (or stories.) Complex is probably the best part, but the finale with "Second Coming" - with the X-Men now counting the likes of Magneto and Namor as members - has me marking out every time.
3. Infinity Gauntlet - Also cosmic, but more grounded with Marvel's heroes from Earth. Probably the best Thanos story, and the fight between the skeleton crew of Marvel heroes and the Mad Titan is one of the best you will ever find without a drop of blood being shed.
The original Secret Wars. Good story, noteworthy changes, and a significantly altered MU that changed in the span of a month, but took you an entire year to learn all the hows & whys.
That story is cool, but some really dumb shit happens. Like Spider-Man making the X-Men look foolish and the many Shooterisms (ie: everyone calling each other by their names for no reason at the start of each issue.)
Pulling so hard for Big E to run down during MITB and push Kofi up the ladder on his shoulder to win the briefcase, then months of New Day trying to figure out how three guys can cash in one briefcase.
The Owens-Cena rematch being so rushed kills me because I can only see bad things happening, and the MitB match seems like such a foregone conclusion, that if someone ELSE wins, I might be too weirded out to enjoy it.
Oh yeah I remember that game; my roommate had it and we recreated the NES Pro Wrestling guys. Lil Scrappy is from STL so I heard it all over the radio too.
I think they'll give it Balor on 7/4, but I still think they should strip him of the NXT title, with the explanation that he signed a WWE contract and no longer is an NXT roster member.
Oh I get what you mean, but I read so much of that from that era that it never really bothered me.
The thing that still sticks with me is not only how so many of the iconic characters are played true to form, but some of the stuff they did with lesser characters. The Lizard, Enchantress, Molecule Man--interesting stuff.
I don't think Reigns is getting it. They'll probably do something where Rollins screws him out of it and someone else wins. They seem hellbent on Reigns doing this the right way, probably at Summerslam?
Sheamus is the only other credible one out of the field.
Punk's cash-in on Edge is great for 3 reasons - 1) cashing on someone like Edge is great, 2) Batista's WTF? look as Punk passes him by on the ramp is hilarious, 3) the really happy girl with the MARRY ME CM PUNK sign has tits that jiggle wonderfully when she celebrates.
They could do it that way, but the better move might be the slow burn where Ambrose slowly goes crazy with paranoia about Roman cashing in on him and then he's proven right.
I don't know if Ambrose wins tonight, but I'm almost certain Reigns walks out with the title. Tomorrow night, it's revealed that he has sided with the Authority and Rollins is out.
I posted this earlier today, but let me put it on here too.
Kofi Kingston is gonna be found beat up in the locker room area, and we won't know who did it until Brock Lesnar enters the Money in the Bank Match in Kofi's place. Brock Lesnar wins the match to set up Seth Rollins Vs. Brock Lesnar at Battleground and Kofi Vs. Brock in Japan.
Kane's search for the real culprit of "WHO PUT UNDERTAKER IN A COMA" when it was clearly Kane who had done it was a surprisingly entertaining storyline.
Certain people will throw smarky tantrums, but don't think it's a big deal. Especially Owens losing. Cena/Owens is going longer no matter what, the only match that matters is the blow off.
Reigns winning MITB is the telegraphed result. Shouldn't surprise anyone at this point.
Yeah, the shakiest part of that sequence, the link I'm unsure of, is Ambrose beating Rollins. But I feel like the big red arrow has been lit, you know?
I've got Foley. Rock and Angle above the Benoit one. Austin's in a weird place where spectacle is just as important as workrate. Only Hogan's got that problem. It not only has to be great it has to be insanely memorable.
Between 05 and the Pipe Bomb the only things I can remember and got me watching for more than 2 weeks were Ortons Rumble win and punting Vince (Stopped after HHH neutered him at WM), Bret Hart and Nexus debut (Stopped after Cena neutered them at SS)
I personally only put the Bret match above the Edmonton match but I could see where people would put other matches above for various matches. The Edmonton match was basically everything I love about wrestling condensed to 20 minutes.
This show doesnt really excite me all that much to be honest. MitB, Ambrose/Rollins and Cena/Owens should be fine but other than that I dont care at all. And the Cena/Owens rematch is way too soon. Doesnt make sense.
Poor, sweet Ziggler's cash-in, getting reactions like Hogan for the night. Big E and AJ thrilled for their pal, AJ tearing up a little. Could've been there, but nooooo...the blahness that was WM29 and not being sure if SmarkMania was going to be an annual thing combined to make me pass it up. Great choice, me.
I've got it as Bret, Foley, Rock, Angle and than everything else behind it. The spectacle is more important when you're the head of a golden age. Everything else falls in line behind that.
Ambrose asking Reigns if Reigns would give him a heads up once Reigns wins MitB and Ambrose has the WWE Title. Reigns: "You already know, you'll be the first to know."
Crisis is hot garbage by today's standards. Recommended for historical value only, which probably wouldn't mean anything to a new reader/non-fan anyway.
ReplyDeleteGo with the original Infinity Gauntlet, for older stuff. Something more modern - try Annihilation.
IT'S THE NIGHT OF REMATCHES!
ReplyDeleteCivil War is a good starting point for new readers. Infinity Gauntlet holds up pretty well and is important to the MCU. On the dc side, Blackest Night is fun but it helps to read the other Green Lantern stories leading up. I'm not a big advocate of event comics myself. Most of them suck.
ReplyDeleteI hope Neville pulls off some crazy shit tonight. Him, Kofi and Dolph should make for an entertaining match.
ReplyDeletePoor Mick!
ReplyDeleteFerrari and #Curry posting the threads today... what has the world come to?
ReplyDeleteBlackest Night was a pretty good event, as was Final Crisis.
ReplyDeleteFirst time comic story, watchmen 100%. Superhero wise, daredevil. The Frank miller omnibus's
ReplyDeleteEvent style, for dc, I really liked the sinestro corp war with green lantern was awesome.
For marvel, maybe crisis on infinte earth? Or, the annihilation cross over with the galactic characters is ace.
Oh thank God.
ReplyDeleteWelp, guess it's time to switch off the Fixer Upper marathon on HGTV cool slasher flicks for the PPV.
ReplyDeleteIt's a dirty job but someone has to do it...
ReplyDeleteIn memory of Dusty, I expect some straight-up clubberin' tonight.
ReplyDeleteCan't go wrong with starting with All-Star Superman.
ReplyDeleteEvents: The whole House of M/Civil War/World War Hulk/Secret Invasion/Siege era was really fun even if it ran out of steam towards the end.
That's what I used to say about banging my ex.
ReplyDeleteKick off starts with Rhodes tribute picture and Renee doing an impression. Nice.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I still say about banging my ex.
ReplyDeleteWhat tropes are left for the Money in the Bank winner to accomplish?
ReplyDeleteFirst MitB holder to win WWE Title to win title without using MitB contract.
First MitB holder to get fired before caahing in
First MitB holder to fail to cash in during alloted time period.
I'm sure she considered it to be a small chore.
ReplyDeleteI think #2 was Kennedy right?
ReplyDeleteHe lost the contract due to injury first, then got fired later.
ReplyDeleteAnd some kickin in the belly welly.
ReplyDeleteThey should've done the finish from the Chamber's PPV on this one instead.
ReplyDeleteFirst MITB holder to lose a normal WWE Title match only to immediately cash in and win the title in the second match.
ReplyDeleteEvents are rarely good. Here's my top 3. Top 5, really
ReplyDelete1. Graves almost losing it talking about Dusty.
ReplyDeleteThe original Secret Wars. Good story, noteworthy changes, and a significantly altered MU that changed in the span of a month, but took you an entire year to learn all the hows & whys.
ReplyDeleteFinish to ladder match I'd like to see: Rollins raises the briefcase so high that nobody can get it.
ReplyDeleteSomeone already champion winning the MitB.
ReplyDeleteBooker is terrible here.
ReplyDeleteEven talking about a real friend dying he still sound disinterested.
He's having some trouble holding together.
ReplyDeleteYeah Graves, who knew him a fraction amount of the time could barely hold it together.
ReplyDeleteFucking iPhone cord is frayed and only mostly working. Gotta break out the spare one when I get home.
ReplyDeleteRandy Orton.
ReplyDeleteKinda insensitive having a guy named Graves on the show.
ReplyDeleteKennedy looks so sad losing his briefcase. At least you made some sort of history there, lol.
ReplyDeleteUh no.
ReplyDeleteThat story is cool, but some really dumb shit happens. Like Spider-Man making the X-Men look foolish and the many Shooterisms (ie: everyone calling each other by their names for no reason at the start of each issue.)
ReplyDeleteNeville looks like a bad guy in a 90s cyberhacker movie.
ReplyDeleteKid is always wrong.
ReplyDeleteHuh?
ReplyDeleteI read the thing wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhen?
ReplyDeleteIt's his gimmick!
ReplyDeleteMoney in the Bank\ Shawty what ya thank
ReplyDeleteI'm nowhere near as excited about this show as I was two weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteAll Star Superman is my favorite thing Morrison has ever written and one of my favorite comics ever.
ReplyDeleteSo it's every pay-per-view since 2007?
ReplyDeleteOh GOD that song was everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that too... I get excited for shitty shows... and this one should be good... but I am not hyped at all.
ReplyDeleteThe only guy from the first Money in the Bank still on the active roster is Kane.
ReplyDeleteMy 11.99 (Canadian) this month belongs to Kevin Owens.
ReplyDeleteI remember it being prominently featured in one of the Smackdown games
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see the MitB briefcase be like a bearer bond and someone take the physical case from the winner and cash in.
ReplyDeleteEdge-Undertaker MITB cash-in, champion needs to be standing to start the match - OFF
ReplyDeleteThat match in the Silverdome.
ReplyDeletePulling so hard for Big E to run down during MITB and push Kofi up the ladder on his shoulder to win the briefcase, then months of New Day trying to figure out how three guys can cash in one briefcase.
ReplyDeleteThe Owens-Cena rematch being so rushed kills me because I can only see bad things happening, and the MitB match seems like such a foregone conclusion, that if someone ELSE wins, I might be too weirded out to enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah I remember that game; my roommate had it and we recreated the NES Pro Wrestling guys. Lil Scrappy is from STL so I heard it all over the radio too.
ReplyDeleteIf Ownes wins clean again here WTF do they do with the nXt title? Doesn't he seem kind of above it?
ReplyDeletePlus Xavier Woods victory celebration would be the best moment of the PPV.
ReplyDeleteJBL goes from "oh no, not this way, not on The Undertaker" to "THIS IS BRILLIANT MAGGLE" in 30 seconds.
ReplyDeleteCena & Sandow were the two guys I think.
ReplyDeleteTokyo show?
ReplyDelete"ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?"
ReplyDelete"Mostly, but Portuguese is my first language."
(Gets shot anyway)
Goes to Balor in Japan either way, I would guess.
ReplyDeleteHe drops the belt on 7/4.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go ahead and predict Sheamus winning MitB.
ReplyDeleteLOL this might be the funniest thing you've ever posted.
ReplyDeleteHe's jobbing in Tokyo.
ReplyDeleteand I'm going to make MitB and TAG TEAM MATCH
ReplyDeleteTitle for Title match at Battleground.
ReplyDeleteAfter he wins he relinquishes the NXT belt allowing for NXT to crown a new champion.
Just to have a different prediction or you really think Reigns isn't getting it?
ReplyDeleteFREEBIRD RULES!
ReplyDeleteI think they'll give it Balor on 7/4, but I still think they should strip him of the NXT title, with the explanation that he signed a WWE contract and no longer is an NXT roster member.
ReplyDeleteOh I get what you mean, but I read so much of that from that era that it never really bothered me.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that still sticks with me is not only how so many of the iconic characters are played true to form, but some of the stuff they did with lesser characters. The Lizard, Enchantress, Molecule Man--interesting stuff.
Really? I think I've posted way funnier shit then that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Reigns is getting it. They'll probably do something where Rollins screws him out of it and someone else wins. They seem hellbent on Reigns doing this the right way, probably at Summerslam?
ReplyDeleteSheamus is the only other credible one out of the field.
HOLLA HOLLA HOLLA
ReplyDeleteRandom fact for tonight: Kane will be in his 7th MITB match, the new record holder.
ReplyDeleteThey stripped Paige, but that's only because she was also WWE Divas champ.
ReplyDeletePunk's cash-in on Edge is great for 3 reasons - 1) cashing on someone like Edge is great, 2) Batista's WTF? look as Punk passes him by on the ramp is hilarious, 3) the really happy girl with the MARRY ME CM PUNK sign has tits that jiggle wonderfully when she celebrates.
ReplyDeleteIf it's not Reigns, I'm shocked.
ReplyDeleteI think Dolph will win.
ReplyDeleteI don't see them giving Owens the US Title, but maybe they should.
ReplyDeleteI love how Punk basically cashes in and acts the exact same way the next year.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a lounge, it's a curtain with a tv screen.
ReplyDeleteWow. All kinds of shit being thrown at Vince for betraying Rock.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to be the one that stripped Paige.
ReplyDeleteI loved the fan reaction video that came out after that cash-in, the hick family that was HIGHLY offended Punk would cash on Jeff.
ReplyDelete#AskKO When do we get a match between you & BROCK LESNAR?
ReplyDeleteR-Truth beats Barrett
ReplyDeleteCena beats Owens
New Day beats Primetime Players
Nikki beats Paige
Ryback beats Big Show
Roman wins MITB
Ambrose beats Rollins
King Barrett is the jobbingest King ever
ReplyDeleteOne of the most logical heel turns since The Megapowers Exploding.
ReplyDeleteMost Rumbles without a win and Most MitB's without a win, is he up to 20 losses combined yet?
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Rock Bottom to Steph!
ReplyDeleteHe won MITB a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteRock turn tonight for Roman? Ambrose beats Rollins in a war, Roman cashes in, Rock heel turn promo on Raw.
ReplyDeleteBrazilian Kid, is that you?
ReplyDeleteHe won in 2010 and cashed in the same night. It was great!
ReplyDeleteHad the feeling for a month, why divert from it now - Reigns wins MITB, Ambrose beats Rollins, Reigns cashes on Ambrose.
ReplyDeleteThey could do it that way, but the better move might be the slow burn where Ambrose slowly goes crazy with paranoia about Roman cashing in on him and then he's proven right.
ReplyDeleteIf the briefcase falls off the rope, does that make the briefcase itself the MitB holder?
ReplyDeleteMy feels couldn't take that.
ReplyDeleteNow for the ultra-memorable Thwagger cash-in...didn't even recall it was against Jericho.
ReplyDeleteDid he?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah after a quick wikipedia search he did. I wasn't watching then.
So of everyone they have under contract how are these three idiots the best choice for a pre-show panel?
ReplyDeleteHow bummed out is everyone going to be if Ambrose and KO get jobbed out and Reigns win the MITB?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Ambrose wins tonight, but I'm almost certain Reigns walks out with the title. Tomorrow night, it's revealed that he has sided with the Authority and Rollins is out.
ReplyDeleteI posted this earlier today, but let me put it on here too.
ReplyDeleteKofi Kingston is gonna be found beat up in the locker room area, and we won't know who did it until Brock Lesnar enters the Money in the Bank Match in Kofi's place. Brock Lesnar wins the match to set up Seth Rollins Vs. Brock Lesnar at Battleground and Kofi Vs. Brock in Japan.
Rock, best and worst show for the 99 Season?
ReplyDeleteRemember Ron Burgundy's eyeballs after being told his hair was stupid?
ReplyDeleteI love All Star Superman, but that's not an event as the reader had asked about.
ReplyDeleteKane's search for the real culprit of "WHO PUT UNDERTAKER IN A COMA" when it was clearly Kane who had done it was a surprisingly entertaining storyline.
ReplyDeleteHow many wrestlers forever have their best match obscured due to it involving Chris Benoit?
ReplyDeleteI want Reigns to win MitB and don't particularly want Ambrose to win.
ReplyDeletepreshow have a match yet?
ReplyDeleteAngle and Kevin Sullivan?
ReplyDeleteBrock/Kofi is just a random match so Brock can get a free trip to Japan.
ReplyDeleteI could see that happening except Lesnar only enters the MITB at the very end.
ReplyDeleteHe is not doing the high flying spots.
Certain people will throw smarky tantrums, but don't think it's a big deal. Especially Owens losing. Cena/Owens is going longer no matter what, the only match that matters is the blow off.
ReplyDeleteReigns winning MITB is the telegraphed result. Shouldn't surprise anyone at this point.
It says something for the excitement of the stip that even Swagger got an excited pop for his win.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be Barrett Vs R-Truth
ReplyDeleteMarquee victory?
ReplyDeleteJoJo can get it.
ReplyDeleteOh boy, what a treat!
ReplyDeleteOh, good. Another Barrett job.
ReplyDeleteBest: Backlash 99
ReplyDeleteWorst: King of the Ring 99
#HEALTHFOOD
ReplyDeleteAustin's second best match?
ReplyDeleteI want Ambrose to lose, but I really hope Steen goes over.
ReplyDeleteMy heart wants The New Day to win MITB but my head says Reigns.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at how Ryback addressed JoJo
ReplyDeleteShe still has a job, she was so dull she got cut from Total Divas
ReplyDeleteRyback believes in The Big Show theory!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the shakiest part of that sequence, the link I'm unsure of, is Ambrose beating Rollins. But I feel like the big red arrow has been lit, you know?
ReplyDeleteWhich is funny when the Guardians didn't even show up until the second Annihilation even, Conquest, and only after that got their own title.
ReplyDeleteChrist....STOP LOOKING AT THE FUCKING CUE CARD.
ReplyDeleteI think Ryback read Rock's Big Show theory lol
ReplyDeleteAnd he's one of rocks favorite wrestlers!!,
ReplyDeleteJojo is AWFUL. Good thing she would make for a good spinner.
ReplyDeleteHolding a microphone and looking cute is right up her alley
ReplyDelete"The Big Guy doesn't like bullies..." except for when he was one.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the Nintendo World Championships and this place has gone insane for the Super Metroid race.
ReplyDeleteRikishi & Brian Christopher
ReplyDeleteShe's got a Downtown Julie Brown vibe.
ReplyDeleteJericho, HBK, HHH.
ReplyDeleteI've got Foley. Rock and Angle above the Benoit one. Austin's in a weird place where spectacle is just as important as workrate. Only Hogan's got that problem. It not only has to be great it has to be insanely memorable.
ReplyDelete*bowl-lees
ReplyDeleteRyback should always get interviewed by her just so he can say "Jojo."
ReplyDeleteEven when he WAS a bully, he didn't like bullies. That's part of what made his heel gimmick decent.
ReplyDeleteBetween 05 and the Pipe Bomb the only things I can remember and got me watching for more than 2 weeks were Ortons Rumble win and punting Vince (Stopped after HHH neutered him at WM), Bret Hart and Nexus debut (Stopped after Cena neutered them at SS)
ReplyDeleteWrong, wrong, and wrong.
ReplyDeleteAre you seriously proposing that HBK and HHH's best match was with Benoit?
ReplyDeleteYeah did he think you said you would like to have a deep, meaningful, philosophical conversation with her or something?
ReplyDeleteShe does. That makes it better.
ReplyDeleteThe Big Guy can read?
ReplyDeleteSuper Metriod is one of the best games ever made.
ReplyDeleteSee!
ReplyDeleteHe could just enter at the end.
ReplyDeleteThis made me want to play it all over again.
ReplyDeleteI personally only put the Bret match above the Edmonton match but I could see where people would put other matches above for various matches. The Edmonton match was basically everything I love about wrestling condensed to 20 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThis show doesnt really excite me all that much to be honest. MitB, Ambrose/Rollins and Cena/Owens should be fine but other than that I dont care at all. And the Cena/Owens rematch is way too soon. Doesnt make sense.
ReplyDeletehuh...anyone know what song is being used on the network right now? Called "Get Busy" I think.
ReplyDeleteRipping off Bust A Move
ReplyDeleteI did. I bet she's a very reflecting and insightful pers.....hahahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeletePoor, sweet Ziggler's cash-in, getting reactions like Hogan for the night. Big E and AJ thrilled for their pal, AJ tearing up a little. Could've been there, but nooooo...the blahness that was WM29 and not being sure if SmarkMania was going to be an annual thing combined to make me pass it up. Great choice, me.
ReplyDeleteI beat ti for about the hundredth time a couple nights ago
ReplyDeleteI'd argue against HHH at NWO01 is his second best match.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad we'll never get to relive the May 2001 super TV week with all the crazy Benoit matches.
ReplyDeleteI've got it as Bret, Foley, Rock, Angle and than everything else behind it. The spectacle is more important when you're the head of a golden age. Everything else falls in line behind that.
ReplyDeleteWhy are their WWEshop commercials better than anything else they do?
ReplyDeleteShit, there's another contender.
ReplyDeleteKevin Nash on the Kimmel per game show.
ReplyDeleteThat... is the shittiest song I've ever heard WWE use.
ReplyDeleteShe should start adding "wubba wubba wubba" to her interviews. That's in Vince's frame of reference, I would have to think...
ReplyDelete*CHEKHOV'S GUN ALERT*
ReplyDeleteThey've gone from Sting/Luger to Shawn/Diesel
ReplyDeleteSo, there's your foreshadowing segment for the evening.
ReplyDeletesounds like disco
ReplyDeleteThis just in:
ReplyDeleteOrea Double Stuf cookies are fucking awesome.
Sledgehammer of Plot
ReplyDeleteAnyone seen the trailer for the Aldo/McGregor? Best MMA promo I've seen.
ReplyDeleteAmbrose and Regins are still just friends right?
ReplyDeleteWhat happened
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how perfectly they've created this Reigns/Ambrose dynamic.
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked. SHOCKED to find that you like them.
ReplyDeleteSure
ReplyDeleteThe "Get Busy" thing they used during the WWE Shop promo? I liked it, and no, Devin, it didn't sound like disco.
ReplyDeleteI dunno but it was terrible.
ReplyDeleteI'm holding out hope that tonight is Rollins' Rumble 2000 breakout performance.
ReplyDeletePunk came back.
ReplyDeleteit does!
ReplyDeleteNo, Roman will propose next winter.
ReplyDeleteAmbrose asking Reigns if Reigns would give him a heads up once Reigns wins MitB and Ambrose has the WWE Title. Reigns: "You already know, you'll be the first to know."
ReplyDeleteI just saw an animal that I couldn't identify in my backyard. It ran by quickly.
ReplyDeleteIf R-Truth vs. Barrett doesn't excite the general non-Network public to sign up, nothing will!
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/e3?feature=int-yo-e3
ReplyDeleteAnyone else watch the E3 stuff on Youtube today?
JUST friends? The bromance seems strong.
ReplyDeleteDuthty Finish recap! A sensational event befitting thee American Dream himself behbeh!
