ROH built up this PPV well. My excitement level would be excessively
higher if Jim Ross was doing the play-by-play, though. Kevin Kelly was dreadful
at getting these angles over. His contrived and forced announcing made it
evident how vital it is to have a play-by-play announcer that can really get
things over.
Nevertheless, this still looks a good PPV. Kevin Steen vs. Silas Young will be a crazy, stiff fight. I am not a fan of Roderick Strong, but I like the psychology-esque buildup for his upcoming match against Alexander. I'm expecting the tag team title match to steal the show. And Elign vs. Cole should be a very good main event. Cole has done a good job at developing a contemptible heel persona. The fans really want to see him get his comeuppance for being a repulsive and despicable champion, so I'm expecting they finally pull the trigger and put the title on Elign.

The Vaudevillain? Totally a ripoff of the Menagerie.
ReplyDeleteBut in all seriousness, haven't watched NXT in awhile, but I watched this week just for them and they did not disappoint.
I don't know about Cole losing the belt, honestly. I know that he's due to drop it, but I think Cole is the better wrestler and character overall. I was at Supercard of Honor in New Orleans, and left slightly unimpressed by Elgin. I'm pretty sure it was because I expected him and Steen to have a better match (I love Kevin Steen in ways that are most likely illegal in at least 9 states and Puerto Rico), but the match left me wanting. I can't put my finger on why, but it just wasn't all the way there.
ReplyDeleteAs for the others, I expect this is Steen's last match in ROH, or close to it. I felt like he was pretty much done when he allowed Elgin to kick out of the piledriver and then got pinned by his own finisher; it felt like a pseudo passing of the torch in some ways before he heads off to Vince-land. Still don't totally understand Lethal's turn, but he and Taven should do fine. I expect, much like yourself, that the tag title match is the show-stealer waiting to happen.
Should be a fun time. I was left sort of cold seeing ROH for the first time live in New Orleans, but I'm hoping that this works much better for myself.
You all get what the "Garrett Dylan" name means, right? I don't have to 'splain it do I?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Cole being a better champion, but I think it's time to put the title on Elign. He's a fan favorite. People have wanted him to win the title for a while now. It's easily their biggest show post-Gabe Saposkly era. Cole has gotten the better of Elign in the past, bloated about it, and then shaved his hair and assaulted his wife. If they want Elign to be champion, it would be hard for him to recuperate. If they don't believe he's the guy right now, it would be a really strong development for the Cole's character.
ReplyDeleteFair enough. I agree that Elgin is due for the win, and if Steen is indeed gone after this, then there aren't many other guys that are ready to move into that spot - you get the inevitable rematch, etc. if Cole loses it. I'm just not completely sold on Elgin. I'd be happy to be wrong.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the biggest question is, who's next? Bennett? Young? Strong again? I feel like ROH needs the next big guy to step up there, and I'm not sure that he's on this PPV. Unless Steen is staying, but he's achieving John Cena status of being above the belt at this point in a lot of ways; I just don't see what's left for him, especially relating to the title situation.
AJ Styles.
ReplyDeleteThe answer (in the short term) is Styles.
Elgin's carrer in ROH is dependant on this win.
ReplyDeleteCole's isn't. Elgin can win it and drop it back to Cole--or to anyone else if it doesn't work, but he is done if he chokes AGAIN.
I've really become a huge fan of Cole's heel character. I'm really hoping he keeps the belt. I would like to see a showdown between Cole and AJ for all the gold at Final Battle because I think Bullet Club versus the Empire (I think that's Cole's group's name, right?) would be awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think Elgin has regressed this year, too. Last year he seemed like a wrestling machine and this year, I dunno, he's good but not great. Hopefully he proves me wrong and has many great matches in the future. But ROH doesn't have a lot of strong style wrestlers anymore.
I think the next champ in waiting is going to be Cedrick Alexander or, my favorite, ACH. Both of those guys can go and bring the workrate and have charisma. I think ACH has the most of the two.
Steen and Elgin tried to top their first match in the second and third bout.
ReplyDeleteThey never quite made it
I don't get the Cedric love. He's alright but I'd put a lot of guys infront of him.
ReplyDeleteACH is amazing, but they haven't booked him at a tv title level. He ain't sniffing the world title for awhile yet
FISH AND O'REILLY'S PROMO IS GOLD
ReplyDeleteKalisto! Finally!!! He was great in DGUSA, so I expect big things from him in NXT. Hopefully his frequent sparring partner, Solomon Crowe, pops up soon.
ReplyDelete.....they suck at naming jobbers?
ReplyDeleteGarrett Dylan is reportedly actor/singer Kris Kristofferson's son. Kristofferson starred in a movie called "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid." In the movie, Billy (Kristofferson) had a sidekick played by singer Bob Dylan. So his name is basically an homage to his father's most acclaimed film role.
ReplyDeleteAll I can hope is Kalisto doesn't get hurt. If he can manage to avoid that, he should be fine.
ReplyDeletebitches be trippin’ and shit
ReplyDeleteBitches be trippin and shit, indeed!
Regal managing the Vaudvillians on the main roster would delight me to no end.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't sound enticing enough to spend $35.
ReplyDeleteThey've really got their finger on the pulse of today's youth.
ReplyDeleteNext week the debut of Kenny Hawkes. The son of Kenny Rogers, whose name is a tribute to that classic The Gambler!
ReplyDeleteWe can therefore scientifically conclude that yes, bitches be trippin
ReplyDeleteLarry Mercer is certainly no Bill Mercer. Could he be any worse?
ReplyDeleteHow much is it?
ReplyDeleteiPPV isi $19.99. Not sure the price of standard PPV.
ReplyDeleteMandy Leon...WOW
ReplyDeleteComments from a guy out of the ROH loop:
ReplyDelete-What the hell kind of name is Redragon? Are they supposed to be redoing a dragon? Did they forget the extra "D" in Red Dragon? Are they worth a damn? Because I cannot believe that someone name Bobby Fish could do anything but suck.
-Jay Lethal deserves so much better than ROH's equivalent of the Paul Jones Army.
-BJ Whitmer is still there?????
Either way, it is way too much to pay for a company the size of ROH. If WWE is charging $50, that is basically saying they are half the size of WWE, which they are not. I'd gladly pay $10 to check them out, but that's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteYeah , wasn't he a hacker? Where did he get to?
ReplyDeleteThey're a great team but I too have wondered about the name and google has not been helpful in figuring it out. At first I thought it was a Silence of the Lambs reference, but the spelling is weird. The team was made to feud with Davey Richards and I believe at one point they said that's why the DR in the middle is capitalized.
ReplyDeleteThe Ric Flair solution would be to put Elgin over, then have Cole regain the title in one of his subsequent rematches, possibly due to a swerve of some sort. Does Elgin still hang out with that monster team, Hansen and what's-he-called? Those guys could turn on him and cost him his newly won title. Then Cole's the champ again and Elgin has a diversion.
ReplyDeleteROH should be $10, you're right. $25 smackers is insane for an independent PPV. I'm expecting a HUGE buyrate disappointment for them. I think their older PPV's that they aired on a couple month delay back in 2007 only got like 200 buys or something.
ReplyDeleteNever been the biggest ROH guy, only really watching the product during the HDNet era, and watching this preview doesn't excite me too greatly for the show, but probably will order just to support the different promotion for once.
ReplyDeleteThey got themselves into a corner in the ME.If Elgin loses,he's not gonna be taken seriously anymore.Cole is great heel, alhough his ring work is not on the level I hope he would be.If Elgin wins, who's gonna be the next challenger? That's the big question.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited about Taven/Lethal,I'm enjoying this feud so far.
If O'Reilly wasn't so awful in the ring, he'd be gold. Fish and O'Reilly as a pair of condescending hipsters would be great.
ReplyDeleteWhat,Kyle is very good to great in the ring,he's way better then Cole.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand his spotty, MMA-influenced bullshit.
ReplyDeleteAlright,I hate the top rope armbreaker, but that's it.Check the match he had with Gargano at Mystery Vortex 2,it's **** match that will change your opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe other guy is Raymond Rowe.
ReplyDeleteACH has been a perennial curtain jerker, but he's due to move up. He's just too good and too charismatic. He needs a true feud, though. Hopefully he'll get into the TV title scene and work up towards the main event. He's their future.
ReplyDeleteIf they kept tv title on Ciampa he would be the perfect guy to take it off.
ReplyDeleteVaudevillains gimmick is HORRIBLE. This show was horrible.
ReplyDeleteThe guy is really, really small but had some fancy moves. On the main roster, I sadly think he'd look awkward but here's to hoping for the best. Maybe a Cruiser division in 2015.
ReplyDeleteWe have some time before that will appear, but I like to see that one day.
ReplyDeleteI figure I should, seeing as I was in it
ReplyDeleteActually it wouldn't be that hard to do programmatically speaking at this point, as long as there was a healthy delay to allow for processing time.
ReplyDeleteI can't handle all the dubbing myself. If I didn't know those shows by heart, I probably wouldn't even notice or care much, but since I do it is very jarring and that's sort of the point of the Network to begin with -- it's a huge nostalgia trip, but it is definitely an annoying trade off.
ReplyDeleteThe WCW stuff is the worst though, since a lot of their music was either licensed from a third party or part of the Turner stock library at large -- so I don't think much of it was inherited as part of the WCW sale. Plus the dubbing of Buffer -- that guy is one smart dude by the way, basically trademarking the schtick and the likeness ASAP once he realized he was onto something.
Buffer is not edited out on the Network. The majority of the generic, Turner library music is also intact.
