Been watching some Network stuff from the fall of 1995 and got to thinking: What happens if Owen Hart makes it to In Your House 3 as scheduled and putting in Davey Boy as a replacement was never needed? Who walks away with titles and where do we go from there? If Shawn and Diesel win the belts like they did, then there's no excuse to strip them the next night - do they get beat by The Smokin' Gunns? (I'm highly doubting that one) or do they have a little run with the straps? Just curious....
I'm confused, is this a kayfabe question or a serious one? Because Owen was there the whole time and they just came up the Bulldog substitution as a way to get out of the title change guarantee.
I mean, I imagine they could have just changed the titles and then had them vacate the next night, or just drop them back to Owen & Yoko in a rematch. But whatever way they had gone would have still sucked.
I had always heard Owen was legit late to the show because his daughter was being born or something. No? My bad...
ReplyDeleteYeah, that question is... "special".....
ReplyDeleteI remember the same thing... not that I believed it, but I remember the exact same thing.
ReplyDeleteMark is as Mark does.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just the booze, or me being an overall dick (a little from columm A, a little from column B?) , but I just LOVE the idea of a guy being legit late for a PPV main event, so they rebook the entire thing with a replacement, just for the guy to arrive, suit up, and do a shoot run-in late in the match, and get shoot pinned by the guy's finisher. God I hope he was serious... :)
ReplyDeleteUnless it was something that was totally outside the talent's control, like a flight delay, etc. I would totally fire said talent. There is no excuse for being late when you are booked in advance.
ReplyDeleteOr if you're busy killing your family, it's be hard to get to a pay per view in the middle of that.
ReplyDeleteI think he kinda fired himself, so no worries there.
ReplyDeleteI had always heard Owen was legit late to the show because his daughter was being born. A quick check on Wikipedia shows her birthday as 9/23/95, the day before the event.
ReplyDeleteI think if you do a hot shut title change, you'd do it with Michaels and Owen and the IC title. Then have Shawn win the belt back on Raw the next night in a ****+ TV match.
ReplyDeleteOwen and Yoko were an awesome team.
ReplyDeleteI remember being a big mark for the triple crown concept for this show. Big disappointment that it ended up as a bait and switch.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. Owen was given the night off from the Superstars taping two nights later because of it.
ReplyDeleteHBK/Diesel were winning the belts regardless. The show was in Michigan, I was there in attendance, cmon.
ReplyDeleteI think this is the first time I met Razor too
That's what I always heard, but I have no idea if it was kayfabe or not. According to Wikipedia his daughter was born the night before, so I guess it could be legit, probably not though.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, but I'd do the rematch at SS, you could find 2 other guys to stick in the wild card match. My 2 favorite wrestlers in a singles match for a title? I would have bought the show for that reason alone.
ReplyDeleteOh what planet is is fathomable that Shawn Michaels or Kevin Nash would lay down for Owen or Yokozuna in 1995. C'mon!
ReplyDeleteDid HBK and Yoko ever wrestle one on one? Could have been a fun big vs little match.
ReplyDeleteBeen watching some classic stuff from the start of '94:
ReplyDeleteWhat happens if, during the 10-on-1 beating on the Undertaker, Yokozuna DOESN'T open the urn? Does the Undertaker fight them all off? Does he stuff ALL of them into the giant casket? Is Yokozuna more likely to eat Paul Bearer than the Headshrinkers?
They had a quickie Raw match around the time Shawn got the belt. Shawn sold a beating for a few minutes, made the comeback, Superkick, 123.
ReplyDeleteNight after Summerslam 96 I believe
ReplyDeleteBrian Lee doesn't have a job in 1994. Think of the Brian Lee!
ReplyDeleteHad razor met the razor that night?
ReplyDeleteYeah, but he was there at the end of the show in his gear to do the run-in and get pinned. That's a pretty specific type of lateness.
ReplyDeleteYea in the back I remember. He was with Shawn and I want to say maybe a headshinker, like Fatu or someone
ReplyDeleteAh man, he was supposed to be making a difference :(
ReplyDeleteIIRC, the title change wasn't retroactively erased, they were just stripped IIRC of the titles the night after. So no bait and switch.
ReplyDeleteClassic or Clusterfuck:
ReplyDeleteOwen/Yoko vs Colossal Connection
Yeah but the whole idea is a big title change in the first live Raw on the Monday night wars.
ReplyDeleteOwn read working.
ReplyDeleteTwice. Before Yokozuna's face turn (January 96, or so) and the night after Summerslam 96. Odd thing about that one was Cornette announced Yokozuna was back with him before the match but nothing came of it.
ReplyDeleteThe belts went back to Owen/Yokozuna because Owen wasn't technically in the match when he was pinned, so Diesel/HBK got to celebrate with the belts to end the show but other than that it meant nothing.
ReplyDeleteOdd that they didn't use Owen as an IC contender until 1997, and by that point I was so used to him not being a singles threat him holding the IC belt seemed out of the blue.
ReplyDeleteI was there, too!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite rib on Owen: Bret telling the boys Owen named his daughter Stuella, after their dad.
ReplyDeleteYou win the internets for today for this comment.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, but the question in the thread is motivating me to go full-on Mark from here on out.
But in all seriousness, if the urn hadn't been opened Undertaker would have totally stuffed all those dudes into the casket himself. RIP.
ReplyDeleteMy God was South Park good tonight.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he clearly didn't miss the PPV since he did make an appearance, but his daughter really was born that weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat happens if hogan doesn't beat Andre at WrestleMania 3? Does Andre take the belt and go into hiding until November?
ReplyDeleteBeen watching some classic stuff from the start of '92:
ReplyDeleteIs that REALLY the Ultimate Warrior? Or did he die?
It's still real to me dammit!
ReplyDelete- This emailer
I could have sworn Owen ran in wearing a suit.
ReplyDeleteChris could have totally made it to the show, he just decided that hanging around his house was a better option.
ReplyDeleteI liked Owen and while his credibility had dropped a lot, I marked out huge when he won his first IC title. Also loved Bulldog's markout moment too, because you know that bit wasn't scripted and Bulldog was genuinely happy for Owen.
ReplyDeleteShawn did the best job he could, but at the end of the day it's hard to carry a guy that weighs 800lbs.
ReplyDeleteThere's a match between them from Kuwait on YouTube. 15 minutes long, title on the line, not good at all. But you get to see a pro-shot match with no commentary, so there is that.
ReplyDeleteI can picture Kevin Nash laying down in 1995. Much easier than standing. Big Kev approves.
ReplyDeleteThe original Ultimate Warrior died after the Parts Unknown Mafia caught him smuggling cigarettes. They replaced him with Texas Tornado for his 92 run, and then for his 96 run it's Terri Runnels in a muscle suit.
ReplyDeleteOk, one last one.
ReplyDeleteWhat if Hogan isn't at the gym, and actually answers Paul Orndorff's phone call? Then is everything fine and dandy, and they never feud, and they chase after the tag titles while being BFF's? Who does Hogan defend against for all of 1986?
He just can never pull himself away from the gym
ReplyDeleteDamn it Scott, I-75 can be a bitch! OWEN WAS LATE!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome and wish there would be more "in kayfabe" mails (rather than the millonth discussions about Montreal/the invasion/WWE Mt. Rushmore/...).
ReplyDeleteAndre doesnt die a few weeks later
ReplyDeleteI think the RAW after Summerslam 1996 as well
ReplyDeleteKeep Andre and Yoko in the ring for no more than 30-seconds, and I'm sure Owen vs. Haku gets 3-stars.
