This is not complicated.
To make the IC and US titles mean something (by that I mean people care about who holds them and get excited to see them defended or change hands) ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS PUT SOME KIND OF MEASURABLE, TANGIBLE BENEFIT TO THEM.
The MITB briefcase is important because it leads to a title shot. Winning the Royal Rumble is important because it leads to a Mania title shot. If they want people to give five fucks about the IC and US title, I repeat, ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS PUT SOME KIND OF MEASURABLE, TANGIBLE BENEFIT TO THEM.
For example, a late entry into the rumble; a guaranteed title shot at one of the secondary ppvs; guaranteed spot in MITB or elimination chamber; a PPV where the two champions face-off and winner gets a title shot the next night on Raw; etc.. There are a million things they could do to make people care about the titles and use the titles to propel midcarders into the main event, which used to be how they used the IC title (Warrior, Savage, Bret, Shawn, HHH, Rock, Austin, to name a few). This would also dissuade them from putting it on losers like the Godfather, Jeff Jarrett, Goldust, and all the other losers who have held it.
This is not complicated.
Sorry, I was watching the new Star Wars trailer and got distracted. Can you say it again?
Did Officer Farva die for real or what?
ReplyDeleteThe DX book review fiasco is one of the great moments in BoD history.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say--I think that would actually diminish the prestige of the titles themselves. Championships should be a reward in their own right, not a pathway to something else
ReplyDeleteIf that's why Orton dressed that way, that's awesome.
ReplyDeleteI am unclear on how this e-mailer would restore prestige to the secondary titles.
ReplyDeleteI think the Brock thing was a blade job as there was a video of him being slipped a blade from the ref....possibly...maybe...nothing confirmed.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I like the element of blood and while I don't think they should break it out often, they should allow it sometimes in a big match. If it rarely happens, when it does it becomes more special.
I liked when the US Title in WCW made the holder the #1 contender for the World Title....then again I just liked that there were #1 contenders to begin with and actually people fighting and trying to win matches because they mattered.
ReplyDeleteIf the WWE was serious about restoring the prestige to the IC and U.S. Titles then they should just have Bryan and Cena drop their titles to Roman Reignsand left him unify those Titles..No one in their right mind would ever think the WWE Title was more prestigious while that disgusting Seth Rollins is Champion..Everyone would recognize Romans unified IC/U.S. as the top Title in the WWE...
ReplyDeleteI always liked when announcers would at least mention that you made more money when you were a champion. People can instantly relate to that.
ReplyDeleteLet's say, TV champion 10k monthly bonus
ReplyDeleteUs champion: 50k
World champion and tag champs: 100k
If the WWE was serious about restoring the prestige to the IC and U.S. Titles then they should just have Bryan and Cena drop their titles to Roman Reigns and let him unify those Titles..No one in their right mind would ever think the WWE Title was more prestigious while that disgusting Seth Rollins is Champion..Everyone would recognize Romans unified IC/U.S. as the top Title in the WWE.....
ReplyDelete*How come if you edit a comment it goes to moderation and gets deleted?
Even if they don't mention specific dollar amounts, it makes a difference when a guy like Kevin Owens talks about stabbing Zayn in the back to take care of his family. HOW does that matter? Oh yeah, the champion makes more money that everyone else. Gorilla and Jesse used to do that, and it was just one little thing that made it all seem more real.
ReplyDeleteThat's something they brought to explain Owens' motivation, he needs to be champion to have more money, therefore, he'll do anything to keep the belt.
ReplyDeleteLol, I just mentioned that too.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS NOT COMPLICATED
ReplyDeleteeasiest fix they can make. dump the sinister authority figure and go back to cash as an incentive.
ReplyDeleteProblem with the guaranteed title shot for secondary champ is that guys only care about the title right before that ppv. Example: see tna x division champ
ReplyDeleteSo very simple. Actually sort of baffled they haven't figured this out. People all want money, and sometimes we just want to watch a couple of guys fight over that.
ReplyDeleteHe had some issues.
ReplyDeleteThey said stuff like that about Flair all the time too. Not only was he an egomaniac who needed the belt for personal validation, he would also go to any lengths to keep it b/c being the champ was the way he was able to kayfabe afford the life he led.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point.
ReplyDeleteWhat athletes make is a huge part of the fans' conversation in legit sports. Fans want their favorite athletes to make a lot, or bitch that a guy they hate makes too much. That could translate easily to wrasslin'.
ReplyDeleteJR was a big enough star in southern wrestling that teenage me looked at the start of that and said, "Why the f--- is JR in a f---ing toga?" You cannot underestimate how much of a linchpin Ross was to the Mid-South promotion, and how much his credibility carried over to his WCW work. About the only thing they could have done to make it worse was give Ric Flair a hair cut and call him Spartacus.
ReplyDeleteIC champion was always the #1 contender, even if they weren't actively in a program with the champion. The idea that, once they weren't busy with whoever was chasing them, they could say, "now I want the big belt," brought a hell of a lot of prestige.
ReplyDeleteHell, the U.S. Title matches on early Crockett PPVs were every bit as important and memorable as the main events.
I don't necessarily think you need Bryan or Cena to elevate the belt. You need to do a better job at elevating everyone around them.
Nothing I hate more than when the secondary champion is used as job fodder for the main champ on a random Raw.
Ummm but there is a #1 contender. It's whoever beats the champ in a non-title match, Maggle!
ReplyDeleteIt's usually the latter, the commoners bitch. Which in why in real sports, they've strayed from often mentioning prize winnings. I watch old sports events on Youtube too much from the 80s and 90s, there's a very noticeable difference. For heels, it can work, but they're probably better off not telling everyone Cena's a multi-millionaire.
ReplyDeleteIt's popular on MMA message boards for fans to take up the cause of fighters to make more money (I love the UFC, but I do think they underpay their fighters). It could work if done properly.
ReplyDeleteYou know what? Fuck Star Wars. There. I said it. I may change my mind come the new film's release, and I hope it turns out well. But, christ. Jedi was camp (though my fave), and 1-3 were largely poor with some high spots. Granted, different minds behind these, but I am taking a wait and see approach.
ReplyDelete1: Put the title on a guy people either really like or really hate (by their character not their crappy ring work).
ReplyDelete2: Have said guy beat other people for a long time until another guy who also beat other people for a long time comes to challenge.
3: Profit!
Self-pity = pageviews, baybee.
ReplyDeleteWait, did that lousy book review guy write Titan Sinking (with one of his names, obv. being a pseudonym) or is he just using someone else's book title for his URL? If so, what a douche.
ReplyDeleteI like Chris. I think he's a good guy who started off strong and then something certainly seemed to change with his DX review. He shared a lot of personal details that painted a rough life and trying to get things together. So, I hope for the best with him.
ReplyDeleteYour ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
ReplyDeleteJust stop jobbing the champs all the time. You've got twelve billion wrestlers under contract, use one of them to build your challengers.
ReplyDeleteIt is, but that's sort of separate from this - we have an idea of what they really make in real life. In pure kayfabe terms though, it works best if there is a hook as to WHY they are fighting and why a win/loss matters. $, titles, women, revenge - something. Money is the easiest common denominator. Make it seem like the "losers go home with the short end of the purse" as gorilla used to say. we know it's BS but at least it's an explanation.
ReplyDeleteYeah but would that put them in the hunt?
ReplyDeleteIt looked like Brock smashed himself on the metal rod that connects the turnbuckle to the post. The blood was so instantaneous. Meethinks WWE specifically told him to hardway, but not to blade so they could claim no responsibility for it and keep Mattel happy.
ReplyDeleteOnly if they create separation and then build momentum. Otherwise, they're screwed.
ReplyDeleteAlso, "losers" holding the belt can work if their reigns serves a larger purpose and/or generates enough heat and money to justify the reign. Case in point: The Honkytonk Man.
ReplyDeleteThat = True.
ReplyDeleteThey gave the rod a parade afterwards. I wanted to see the rod!
ReplyDeleteYou, know I was just thinking about that - it doesn't SEEM like they have many wrestlers under contract any more.
ReplyDeleteIf they need jobbers, I'd love for them to randomly rotate NXT wrestlers up to do spots here and there - build the idea that the major leagues is something that wrestlers WANT to be a part of and makes it look like it's harder to achieve.
I thought I was jaded and done with Star Wars, but that new trailer made me very excited for the new movie. I really like how they're going forward with the story and using old characters to introduce new characters.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem with this proposed solution is that it creates the illusion of it being a "secondary" title, which in effect hurts its prestige. I think Cena is doing an awesome job of acting like holding the United States Championship is the most important thing to him. Compare that to him saying, "I'm holding this title....which is going to give me a better opportunity to win the World Championship!"
ReplyDeleteThe easiest solution is what they're doing (with Cena, anyway). The champ is making it seem like it's important to have the title. He's defending it regularly. The matches are competitive and he's winning them clean. They need to build up the challengers similarly, like they did with Rusev.
I think that was the first post/thread I read on here when I found the site. Tremendous stuff.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of indy geeks out there looking for a cheap payday. Bring back squash matches at least on Main Event.
ReplyDeleteActually, there was video of the ref passing Roman a blade. Seems weird if they were gonna have Brock blade to not pass it to him directly, but since Roman didn't bleed and the ref clearly handed him something, 2+2=4.
ReplyDeleteThe title should be it's own reward, not a ticket to a greater one.
ReplyDeleteWhat often get lost in the story of the WWF national expansion is how they not just raided the territories for wrestlers and managers but announcers and anyone else that would get them a foothold in the different regional markets as well. It's hard to imagine now but the WWF grabbing Mean Gene Okerlund from the AWA was almost as big as a deal as them grabbing Hulk Hogan. Mean Gene was basically the voice of the AWA for about a decade before coming to the WWF. Therefore when the WWF go to sell their syndicated TV shows in AWA territory they will have a familiar voice and face in Mean Gene. Other announcers who spent some time in the WWF include Ken Rensnick and Tony Schiavone. So yeah introducing Jim Ross at a Wrestlemania, especially with the national exposure WCW had in the early-90s, was a big deal.
ReplyDeleteSeriously. All the real bad I-C champs in recent memory and this guy mentions Goldust, who was great as the champion and The Godfather, who was a really good transitional guy because he was fun, over midcard act that the crowd enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteIf someone beats the champion - he should get the title. This non title nonsense is just stupid, because the champions look stupid if they lose a match - non-title or not. And if the champion looks stupid - the title looks stupid.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they already have too many "automatic title shot" options. Doing the same with the IC and US titles will either lead to more title changes or more midcard guys losing title matches. Neither of those sound good to me.
ReplyDeleteIt's not complicated.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about the Honky Tonk Man is that he rarely, if ever, lost by pinfall or by submission. Honky just took advantage of the rules to get disqualified or counted out a lot. Even when he was facing Hulk Hogan as champion (back when the IC champ faced the world champ at the February house shows), the matches always ended in a screwy manner. Today's secondary champions are always losing by pinfall or submission. Champions should not get pinned or submit unless it serves a storyline purpose (i.e. it leads to an actual title shot).
ReplyDeleteJust give the titles to the right guys could solve any problem. And don't let the champions lose non title bouts.
ReplyDeleteImagine if they would have given the IC title (after WM6) to Koko B War and then to Greg Valentine and then to Virgil instead of Mr Perfect, Texas Tornado and Bret Hart. Nobody would have cared about the title anymore.
If you want to give any title to someone, you have to build him - and not with losing against anyone before the title match, but let him win - and let the champion win everything and then you make a feud where the challenger wants the title and then if you have chosen the right guy, it should work.
Why does everyone who posts on this site with the exception of Scott, Bayless and Princess end up having some sort of meltdown?
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely unreal how writing for a pro wrestling blog is somehow a direct cause of depression, addiction, insanity, and so on.
I can't stand Star Wars, but I'm really tempted to buy in on those miniatures games they've got right now (X-Wing, and Star Wars: Armada). They look really good. I just wish they were Space Battleship Yamato or something.
ReplyDeleteTHEY HEADIN' TO DA PAY WINDAH!
ReplyDeleteThe infamous DX book "review", if you missed it: http://www.rspwfaq.net/2013/09/cucchs-book-review-unauthorized-history.html
ReplyDeleteHow about whoever holds the IC or US title gets to ask out any Diva he wants. And they have to say yes, with a 2nd base minimum.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, and it's something that all sports fans recognize. Who's the highest-paid athlete in the world right now? Mayweather. He didn't get there by losing to Big Show.
ReplyDeleteI dunno, some of these veterans get tetchy about putting the young stars over.
ReplyDeleteBut, they're already banging the main eventers
ReplyDelete*Anybody he wants. Put Darren Young in the title hunt!
ReplyDeleteGood point. Alright, the US or IC get their pick of NXT divas.
ReplyDeleteBut make it sound like you don't get paid nearly as much if you're not winning important matches, and suddenly you can have a sympathetic babyface just trying to make a living.
ReplyDeleteAll you have to do is tell us they matter, and then show us by having them regularly defended in good matches involving people we care about. Stipulations like this would only show those titles as a means to an end for something that actually matters. The title itself is what needs to matter. Regardless of a lack of suspense for most of the matches, the Cena open invite is the best thing to happen to either the US or IC title in years.
ReplyDeleteWhatever philosophy you want to use for the secondary titles, it doesn't matter. WWE didn't care. Rusev was the best example, he was undefeated and they were going to continue that to Mania. He had a built-in story with the US belt and his character. And he defended it like 3 times in 4 months on TV, and did nothing with the belt. Maybe they care now, we'll see.
ReplyDeleteBooking your champion consistently to lose just makes him look weak. Simply book them strong against people that you can afford to let do the job, then give him a credible threat, and put him over that threat until you have the next guy ready to push. Oh, and don't have them interact with main eventers because you'd want to keep your secondary champion strong and keep your main eventers as threats in the main event.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. You said the same thing I was thinking, more succinctly.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Cucch is still alive and in a better state of mind now. The DX review was pretty entertaning.
ReplyDeleteNever liked SW. I tried watching the movies and could't get through them all (yes, I haven't seen all of the film. Kiss my hairy white butt). It's not even that I thought they were bad, I just didn't give a shit.
ReplyDeleteThey aren't using the titles to declare an heir apparent anymore. Actually, with the losing streak that usually accompanies the gold, whoever wins the title ends up looking more like the error apparent.
ReplyDeleteI'm presently accepting friendship applications!
LOUD NOISES.
ReplyDeleteYeah, whatever happened to the inherent satisfaction of a job well done?
ReplyDeleteI thought it equaled Thomas Jefferson?
ReplyDeleteOne of Tna's best ideas was making the destination x show a show where the x-division champ got a world title shot.
ReplyDeleteBring back the great American bash and do the same with the U.S. title. Youre the U.S. champ the night of the bash, you get a world title shot. Makes A mid-summer PPV somewhat meaningful, withouy ruining the Summerslam build.
SOoooooooooo...was that one stormtrooper the only black person in that entire galaxy?
ReplyDeleteAt NoC:
ReplyDeleteUS Champ wrestles IC Champ
World Champ wrestles #1 contender
Winner of both matches wrestle each in the Main Event for the World title.
That's exactly why people are excited. Different minds and good filmmakers, no more fucking Lucas, who is the Vince of moviemaking
ReplyDeleteI can't wait till the CFB meltdown.
ReplyDelete"No, ONE of them is banging a main eventer. The other is banging Daniel Bryan, pal." - Vince McMahon.
ReplyDeleteWrestlemania 31 is quietly becoming my pick for second greatest Wrestlemania of all time.
ReplyDelete"Chewy...we're home."
ReplyDeleteI CAME, I SAW, I CAME AGAIN
At no point do we get a clear shot of Brock being handed the blade, nor blading before the impact of the post. Either he's the best person in history at hiding a blade, or in my own theory, did a pre-match blade so that he was "soft" for the moment where he needed to bleed.
ReplyDeleteVeni, vici, VD
ReplyDeletePrincess gets a pass from everyone because most assume she is in fact... a woman on a wrestling website.
ReplyDeleteBayless is a good writer and obviously puts a lot of time and effort into viewing, and reviewing. Scott's stuff speaks for itself.
And the knowledge that while there may be additional rungs to
ReplyDeleteclimb on the ladder, you're now at least one higher than you were.
LLOL Haven't heard that one in awhile. Nice.
ReplyDeleteKilled crossing the street, I believe.
ReplyDeleteNever thought of this; completely valid comparison.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, the IC Champ was always ranked as the #1 contender to the World Title in the PWI rankings.
ReplyDeleteYeah, for real almost a year ago.
ReplyDeleteThey honestly need to merge them ... one world, one mid card, one tag team - less is more when it comes to wrestling titles
ReplyDeleteBecause Rusev was such a dominant champion, John Cena winning the US title, after losing his first shot, meant more than Daniel Bryan beating a bunch of goobers for the Intercontinental title.
ReplyDeleteTo increase the value of a title is easy: Everyone should want to go after it. This is why I liked Cena winning it. He won 15 World titles but he wanted the US title.
ReplyDeleteIf he can get some US title defenses against main eventers it would help the cause.
The NWA had a hundred titles and they were meaningful because they were treated as such.
ReplyDeleteOutsourcing.
ReplyDeleteI love how he basically says he has to hate Shawn because he's a huge Bret fan, like that's a thing or something.
ReplyDelete<------Stayed totally meltdown free! Granted, I've only posted, like, maybe 10 things. But whatever. No meltdown!
ReplyDeleteHonkytonk Man was a really special case. He effectively hijacked the title and it was infuriating to watch him hold the belt over more worthwhile opponents, guys who fit the notion of what an IC champ should be, like Steamboat, Savage, and Beefcake. The thing that made it work was the company's commitment. The temptation to put the belt on Beefcake at 'Mania IV must have been strong, but they held on until Warrior was ready to begin his ascent, and as a result we got one of the most satisfying title changes in WWF history.
ReplyDeleteIt helped, though, that big cards were a lot more sparse back then. Once they decided to let Tonk reign past 'Mania, they didn't really have to make any further decisions about dropping the title until Summerslam. With a big card every month and over a dozen interchangeable upper-midcarders to occupy, it's doubtful they'll ever give one guy that kind of focus again.
That's kinda ridiculous.
ReplyDeletewhat is your pick?
ReplyDeleteDoes pro wrestling blogging cause insanity or simply attract the already-insane?
ReplyDeleteOk, accepting that, I wonder where the "medics" were with the gloves, like when Brock busted Cena open at Extreme Rules?
ReplyDeleteLando is not amused
ReplyDeleteI don't think this guy's meltdown even makes the list. Reneke, Murphy, Caliber. Those are easily the top 3.
ReplyDeleteI posted for a for months and avoided meltdown!
ReplyDeleteWell it was a throwback night. The "son" of Andre won the ARMBAR - although Chris Jericho should have won it by default. DX scrapped with the nWold, which was awesome to see Waltman sell Hogan's punches like a 2005 Shawn Michaels. Undertaker went back to the Texas Ranger look, while Bray Wyatt has become a heel jobber version of Hillbilly Jim. And Brock Lesnar was Bret Harted by losing a title he never lost.
ReplyDelete"Yeah, those fans sure poured that hatred on ol' HBK during his last
ReplyDeletenine years in the company. I thought fans at MSG were gonna burn the
building down when he won the World title at SVS 02, not to mention all
the boos he got during his farewell speech.
Yeah, HBK was hated
just about everywhere he went. Every time he came out, it was like a
Ghost House in "Super Mario World", boos everywhere."
DBSM won that DX book thread
Maybe it was in December 1997. When even Bret Hart himself has forgiven Shawn Michaels for what happened, I think it's time to let it go.
ReplyDeleteCool font, bro.
ReplyDeleteEven though he wouldn't be a full-fledged member of creative until 1995, Ross' fingerprints almost immediately were found all over Wrestling Challenge as soon as he started hosting. The intro was centered around him. Long matches started appearing on the show more often. They pulled a "WE'RE OUT OF TIME!" finish out for a 6-man tag (Tatanka/Gunns vs. Bigelow/Headshrinkers), which the WWF had *never* done. And I didn't pick up on this until he started talking about them on his podcast, but now I'm positive that he was behind all the focus on time limits at the '93 King of the Ring.
ReplyDeleteSorry if I have the wrong guy and/or misunderstood Chris' words.
ReplyDeleteOfficer Farva was the guy who posted a lot, had Farva as his avi, and emailed Scott a bunch, right? He worked in a hospital, I think as an ER doc. That guy died? I remember months ago seeing a "RIP Farva" post and assumed it was an in joke and that he had a meltdown or something.
Although it didn't fit him, I still liked Curt Hennig and the West Texas Rednecks and the song Rap is Crap. Although I do love rap from LaCrae and Humble Tip. They aren't crap.
ReplyDeleteYES. Logically, beating the champion in a non-title match should entitle you to a title match, but putting aside that champions shouldn't be having non-title matches all the goddamn time (let alone losing them), a heel champion shouldn't be afraid to take a powder and bail or blast a guy in the nuts and draw a DQ, even if the title isn't on the line.
ReplyDeleteThe latter makes them look like a coward or a cheater, which is a fine thing for a heel champion to look like.
Eating a sloppy senton from Sin Cara and getting pinned makes you look like a jobber.

Slow your roll there, bud. It was a really good show, probably in the upper third. But I'd have a hard time making an argument for 31 over 3, 10, 17, 19, 20, 21, 26, 28 and 30 at the very least.

Follow the script of Dusty Rhodes as secondary champ: Big Dust always made everyone play up the importance of whatever stupid title he held at any time as booker. the WORLD Television title, the US title aka "The title of America!", and the WORLD six man tag titles. I remember Dusty talking some shit about the TV title being just as important as the NWA title because it had the word "world" in it and represented all of the TV stations. Stupidest thing ever and as a kid I remember thinking "yeah, keep telling yourself that..." BUT it basically became true because Dusty was in main event level feuds with Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson over the #3 title in the company.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that they don't know how to make the titles prestigious, it's that they don't want to. I've accepted it and just enjoy shit for what it is now, or try to anyway
ReplyDeleteI agree with this except for the Jr. Heavyweight Title, friggin' Lazor-Tron held that dumb belt and it meant nothing and this was also because the champ was usually someone like Denny Brown who got his ass kicked in regular non JHW matches.
ReplyDeleteThat was cool but irked me because Honky Tonk, Santana and Steamboat never got title shots as champ. I think Savage did a loop with Hogan in MSG, Philly, Boston and Baltimore as IC champ, but until Warrior-Hogan and then HBK-Bret on that one Survivor Series from Bret's first reign the IC champ never faced the World champ.
ReplyDeleteThe anger that JR showed in that 1996 promo was probably real. Yeah I left a job in the NFL (and WCW) for a toga. It's crisp.
ReplyDeletePrincess is a real person who is indeed a woman and I've known her for over a decade. Just in case this is going to turn into some weird conspiracy theory thing.
ReplyDeleteDeciding number-one contendership by having the champ lose non-title matches is the wrong way to do things--at least when it's the only way. Have tournaments, battle royals, ladder matches, etc., to determine the number-one contender, and position it as something to strive for, the pinnacle of a hero's journey.
ReplyDeleteI really think what they're doing with Cena now is a good thing, it's just a question of how much of a boost he gives the guy who eventually goes over him. Right now he's giving a legitimate rub to everyone who steps in the ring with him (Barrett got the biggest boost though--losing to Cena in a competitive match is a huge step up from what he was doing in the weeks before).
I survived the bloodletting sans meltdown.
ReplyDeleteExactly. And the IC title worked best in the past when it people won it on their way up the card. Their excitement at winning then seemed legitimate. Like most sports, the hierarchy is something like regional, national, international, world - and you work your way up through with each step being a great achievement in it's own right.
ReplyDeleteMuracco was in the early stages of a strong-style meltdown until he got banned too.
ReplyDeleteWell, obviously, you would say that.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't actually a doctor. In the same way as Cuuch wasn't actually a good writer.
ReplyDeleteOK...second.
ReplyDeleteWow. I'd forgotten that.
ReplyDeleteI like how the NWA can bring in a guy with some obscure regional title and he would be treated like an important person wrestling on the show. (like that one guy that they said was Alabama Jr. Heavyweight Champion)
ReplyDeleteMuraco got banned? For what?
ReplyDeleteCFB is a saint.
ReplyDeleteThe "bi a lot of things but by a good writer ain't one of them" line is better.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't hand him anything. He was checking to make sure Roman was ok.
ReplyDeleteJR wasn't actually supposed to debut at 9. He was a last second replacement for Gorilla, who was feeling ill.
ReplyDeleteYeah Diesel getting a shot at Bret at KOTR '94 is the only other example I can think of...though there's probably more.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on late-90s WWF when they had a giant roster but only three titles and that exclusivity made them important. That's just how I look at it at least.
ReplyDeleteI melted down too! But, it was in a Legends House recap, so no one noticed.
ReplyDeleteIf he didn't hand him anything, then three of the ref's fingers went into Roman's clenched palm and Roman closed his hand around them before the ref took his hand back. Strange "are you OK?" gesture.
ReplyDeleteThat was my thought, as well - he didn't hit the giant post, but hit the thing (turnbuckle) jutting off of the post.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one that thinks JR took the whole "toga" thing WAY too seriously?
ReplyDeleteOh, a well-constructed toga that didn't show any of his body at an Egyptian-themed show where everyone else was also wearing togas. The horror. Suck it up, Heenan and Fink certainly had no problems with the idea.
It's standard procedure. The wrestler squeezes the ref's hand if he is ok.
ReplyDeleteThis comment is not getting enough love...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely nailed it.
But perhaps a bit too obscure? (random Rock promo during the Invasion period)
That was Satan I think, that was a classic thread.
ReplyDeleteLost his posting privileges as part of the YouTube ban.
ReplyDeleteJust stay away from the DX stuff and you'll be ok Cucch.
ReplyDeleteDid you write this whole email in italics?
ReplyDeleteSam Jackson is black.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up on WWE, I was brainwashed by them that WCW was crap. So I never watched it and subsequently had no idea who JR was. I didn't like the fact that this nobody was commentating on Wrestlemania.
ReplyDeleteMIKE JACKSON!! Dude looked like he should be an accountant instead of a wrestler.
ReplyDeleteThe doctors were busy preparing their lawsuit against Punk and Cabana
ReplyDeleteYou forgot Tommy.
ReplyDeleteThe correct answer is Thomas Jefferson Suckaaa!
ReplyDeleteShouldn't be too obscure it's on all of his dvds and always in montages of his best promos.
ReplyDeleteYou should have seen it. I thought he was a parody account or got hacked. Told everyone to F off, accused them of being WWE shills, ranted on a bunch of ppl for no reason...
ReplyDeleteHaving the title on Cena is not the right move.
ReplyDeleteBasically, they need to do something besides having people wrestle Cena and lose. The thing is that nobody believes that Cena CAN lose, so it isn't about getting the title -- it's about beating Cena. The title is just kind of there.
That doesn't make the title important. It makes Cena important. He could just as easily say "I'll give respect to anyone who beats me", and you'll end up with the same net effect.
What they need to do is have a heel beat the living hell out of Cena and win the title. Make it clear that the title, and NOT beating Cena, is the important thing. I'd recommend Cesaro (who has been shown to have freak strength and wrestling ability). He needs to cheat his ass off to get it, too. That belt needs to seem like the most important thing in the world, not a Cena prop.
Then he needs to go on the defense. Cheat, avoid people getting their title shot, make every match a non-title match, get disqualified. (AFTER great matches, that is). Have him beat some JTTS and people like Kane and Show, but have it be known that the title is worth all of this.
The reason that the TV Title in NWA and the Intercontinental title used to be worth something is because people going after the titles was important. The belts were important. They weren't a stepping stone (well, they were, but that was never acknowledged), and they weren't dropped to the pre-show of PPVs. The title wasn't just some prop around Dusty's waist -- it was something that Tully was willing to cheat his ass off to get and keep, and it was important because of that.
What they're doing now is the equivalent of everyone "endorsing" Reigns before WM.
Link?
ReplyDeleteI've watched it several times and I just don't see where or how he could have done it. No wrist tape, nobody near him. Someone said they thought he did it before the match and the post opened it back up but that seems dangerous and incredibly precise. Foreheads bust open. It happens.
ReplyDeleteSatan owned it with the quote Bobby posted.
ReplyDeleteI hope I was one of them.
ReplyDeleteI would but looking through my history it looks like most of the posts are gone. Let me see if I can pull up a couple.
ReplyDeleteScott should have an accountability crib where Caliber and Meekin and Reneke and this guy can all stay.
ReplyDelete...I don't think I get the joke.
ReplyDeleteThis wouldn't dissuade them from putting it on "losers", as the writer put it. It would make them keep it on losers 11 months out of the year, then hotshot it when it matters. Note how Austin Aries always seems to care about the X-Title right around option C time? Yeah, it's like that.
ReplyDeleteThat's not at all what that was, but OK.
ReplyDeleteOy vey.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you report false news and get your privileges taken away?
ReplyDeleteNah, I reported news that Bayless had already covered I just hadn't realized it.
ReplyDeleteThat was one of the final events leading to the great purge with half the people with posting rights losing them.
I posted so rarely I was shocked I hadn't been disallowed earlier. Would have saved myself some embarrassment lol
Warrior faced Savage in a title vs title match at some point before WM V but after the Megapowers exploded~!
ReplyDeleteStill a good point, though. WCW used to shill the US title as #1 contender pretty hard, but WWF/E never really pushed the IC title like that.
That is actually awesome.
ReplyDeleteAllegedly... :D
ReplyDeletealso, the WWE seems to have relaxed a bit regarding this policy. there have been other matches in the last years that had cuts in it which were not put on hold.
ReplyDeleteDid that really happen? That's hilarious. I didn't think he was that close to the edge.
ReplyDeleteHow do you make the IC and US Titles matter? Put them on someone not already established as a main eventer and have them hold the title for many months while beating other people at least some of whom are presented as serious competition. This is not complicated.
ReplyDeleteone of my favorite wrestling quotes that I always bring it in those kind of discussions. paraphrasing: "heels don't cheat because they need to but because
ReplyDeletethey WANT to." (afair Mick Foley mentioned him being told this once by Matt Bourne)
Exactly, Rusev beating Cena to keep the title would have done more to add prestige to the belt than Cena holding it could ever do.
ReplyDeleteRestoring prestige to the secondary titles and Bigfoot are 2 things that you think this year will be the year its found. But as time goes on, and years go by, you come to the realization that neither exist.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they've relaxed on a lot of the PG stuff in general, I think.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what it was. I Zapruder'd the shit out of the video frame by frame.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The only thing that would have made it better was darkness and more crowd noise because of the open air. That ppv indoors would have been electric. Let the purist snobs have their own list.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing point as always, Fake Dougie
ReplyDeleteSee, I dislike it being around Cena's waist for just that reason.
ReplyDeleteBeating Cena right now has nothing to do with the title. It has to do with beating Cena.
Sam Jackson isn't black. He's "Motherfuckinese" -- he's his own thing.
ReplyDeleteFucking Sanjay Dutt
ReplyDeleteAre they in this new series or is it going to be one Negro per trilogy?
ReplyDeleteDarth Vader had a black guy's voice? That's a half, right?

ReplyDeleteThat's right I forgot about that match!
ReplyDeleteI love how on the early Starrcades they made a point to bring in every regional champ and the matches largely went over like a fart in church. Those Carolina fans knew diddly squat about half those guys.
ReplyDeleteAs stated the ref is supposed to do this if uncertain if wrestler hurt or selling and if wrestler gives a slight squeeze it is to signal he is ok. No blade. Soory to crush your dreams. Also why would it go to reigns first if brock is blading? why not just slip it to brock directly? Dumb.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. Standard procedureand way for ref to check on wrestler to see if legit hurt or selling. I dont understand how some marks for blood are trying so hard to convince themselves this was intentional bleeding. Makes no sense to pass to reigns first if brock is blading anyway.
ReplyDeletethe show was running so late they had no time to pause to stop the blood like they normally would.
